Planted the "shady" seeds Mar 12, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Since the weather this weekend has been so beautiful, I cleared out a space for my leafy greens garden. Today I planted the seeds: arugula (given to me by my brother), cilantro, red romaine lettuce, kale, and a mixed blend of greens. I also planted some golden sweet snow peas in this area. We'll see how they do! In other parts... ...see more

I'm 5a and desperate to plant!  We just had a hard freeze on Monday so I am happy I have held off.  Lettuce and greens shouldn't mind a bit of cold though :)  The dill might not love it.<... more »

A little experiment Mar 06, 2012

So, I am going to try growing some stuff on the side of my house, which only gets partial sun. I don't know if it will work or not, but I'm giving it a whirl. I'm looking for ways to sneak more vegetables into my small yard. Right now I'm going to try kale and arugula. If anybody has other suggestions, let me know!

How much sun does it get? What direction does it face?
Liz replied about 1 year ago
There are so many pretty colored lettuce, you might want to make a design with the different colors and intersperse your kale and arugula.

Has anybody tried growing veggies in shadier areas? Any success?
Gene replied about 1 year ago
I have done some experiments with this. The most stark example was a fence line that had a lot of sun at the front and complete shade at the back. I planted the same tomato along the fence from front to ba... more »
