| Cavernous San Marzano Tomatoes Sep 12, 2012 | ||
My San Marzano Tomato plants definitely produced like champs this year. The only issue is that half of the fruit was pretty cavernous. Did anyone else have the same experience? Does anyone know what to do to avoid this in the future? Thanks
I have found the same thing in some of my large paste tomatoes as well, but I don't know what causes it (I guess I had just assumed it was a characteristic of the variety, being that they have so few seeds... more » |
Those look pretty much the same as mine did. I'd have to agree with Maria it may just be the norm for paste tomatoes. I had some problem with blossom end rot on some of them but I put that off to... more » |
| An Afternoon with a Beekeeper Sep 11, 2012 | ||
One of my friends knows that I am very much interested in bees and coordinated an afternoon excursion at a community garden on the Charles (Boston, MA). We met with a veteran beekeeper who showed us a number of his hives and was generous enough to share some of his homemade mead. Oh, and he let us spin the honey extractor....just... ...see more
| Trip to Niagra-on-the-Lake (Ontario, Canada) Aug 30, 2012 | ||
A family trip took me to Niagra-on-the-Lake this past Labor Day. It is a picture perfect town (hopefully you can tell by the photos that I have loaded)...very low key - lots of nice folks, good food, and pretty good wine (for that particular part of the globe). What really surprised us were the restaurant flower planters... ...see more
| Heirloom Tomato Tasting...getting social in the garden! Aug 17, 2012 | ||
Already looking to next year, my father supplied me with an assortment of heirloom tomatoes to evaluate for 2013 planting. As there was plenty to share with others, I invited a couple of my community garden friends to come over to taste test the offerings. We enjoyed them all, but I particularly liked the green and orange... ...see more
| What a great selection. The colors are amazing. I really like that size of tomato, also, it is just so much easier to process and seem to be easier to handle on the plants too. |
| I agree, beautiful colors! I've been really digging the orange tomatoes this year - sooo good! Do you have variety names for the ones you have pictured? |
| Harvested potatoes...makes for a nice breakfast side Aug 14, 2012 | ||
Although I didn't end up with too many potatoes, they were just enough for breakfast one morning. Add a little rosemary from the garden along with garlic, olive oil, and some salt....and you get some very tasty roasted potatoes. For breakfast I like a nice egg over easy to go with them...yum!
| Yes! |
| Tomato volunteers - but what's the variety? Aug 13, 2012 | ||
About a month ago I noticed a volunteer tomato plant sprouting amongst a line of marigolds. It held tough and even began fruiting. Now I have some ripe tomatoes that I don't recognize. They are somewhat square and orangey red (maybe they'll be more red if I let them ripen up a bit more. Usually I plant sweet 100s, sungold,... ...see more
| I think they look a lot like a plum tomato, but more square. |
I think we are all on the right track...Roma/plum...it's the dimples that are throwing me off. I've never grown a tomato with that type of indentation. Well, I suppose that all there is to do n... more » |
| Could they be a large grape variety? They look just like my grapes except slightly bigger. |

| Great colors, and a very nice photo! :) |
| Yummy! Your twisted green peppers look a lot like my 'Jimmy Nardello' frying peppers. Are they hots? |
| Cayenne peppers all look the same but don't always taste the same. This year I grew two sweet cayenne types--'Jimmy Nardello' being one. They look and taste great in hot sauce blends. |
| Urban Foraging - say what? Jul 28, 2012 | ||
Luckily, we have BNAN (Boston Natural Area Networks) here in Boston. They do all sorts of outdoor programming and support community gardening within the city limits. On the morning of July 28th, they led a Foraging Walk through parts of the South End. I was able to join them for only an hour and still was able to learn... ...see more
| That sounds like fun, if I had an educated person with me. The differences between edible and poisonous are sometimes to similar for me... :) I am a chicken. :) |
| Our neighbor grew up on our street and takes us for walks through our woods...he has us eat things we'd never have guessed we could! He's also a dr., so he could hopefully save us if needed! |
| Squirrels are at it again... Jul 24, 2012 | ||
Every year I seem to make it through a few small pickling cuke harvests...and then the squirrels catch on. Oddly enough they enjoy taunting me with cuke carcasses that they like to leave on my garden fence. Hopefully I'll get a few more before they do!
| They are sharing with you. They ate what they wanted and have left the rest for you. |
| Oh no! If it makes you feel better, they torment me as well - they dig up my gardens and plant peanuts everywhere - I guess it's good to know that they like cukes, too - I can brace myself for the carnage that my come to my garden :) |
| Hmm...we seem to have our share of squirrels but they haven't ever touched our cucumbers. Maybe yours have a more domesticated palate than ours! :) |
| Lyman Estate (Waltham, MA) - movie in the gardens Jul 19, 2012 | ||
Last week a friend of mine organized an outing at the Lyman Estate (built in 1793). What's not to like about spending a clear summer night on lovely grounds (with a greenhouse!) for a showing of the Princess Bride (which is surprisingly timeless)? I have provided a few shots of the historic home, which was open for touring... ...see more
| You make me wish I could have been there! |
| Amazing, Such a diverse plant palette there. Thanks for the photos. |
| Glad you all enjoyed the photos...hopefully I'll have more gardening fieldtrips coming up to share. There are so many hidden gems close to home...just waiting for all of us to discover them! |
| Red Avocado - who knew? Jul 14, 2012 | ||
I was at the market on Saturday and came across a red, smooth-skinned avocado. I figured that is was worth a try...a little food adventure for a slow weekend morning. It was perfectly ripe - my knife cut through the meat so easily, revealing a nice looking color. I was eager to taste this new variety (at least new to me),... ...see more
I have never seen one! What an interesting color on the outside. I have ate green avocados that were really watery, so I imagine that this one could vary with taste depending on other... more » |
| I've never seen one either ... it is beautiful ... sorry the taste didn't live up to the beauty. |
| Garden harvest & some gifts from across the fence Jul 13, 2012 | ||
I was able to pick Japanese eggplant, green bush beans, peas, cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, cucumbers, and a ton of herbs. Oh, and my garden neighbor gave me a summer squash and a HUMUNGOID zucchini, which will probably turn into zucchini bread (unless you all have some better ideas for it). :-)
| It all looks yummy ... I know you that you can be more creative than zucchini bread but then again it is sooo good. |

In the early spring the daffodils and tulips start to poke out of the ground...the 2 lilac bushes begin their blooms soon after. During mid-May, I begin to add veggie, herb, and annual plantings. Also, my parents bring in boxes of dahlia tubers that have been stored in the suburbs over the winter. By July the garden is coming up in full force and the tomatoes are ripening by early August. No matter what time of the gardening season, the patio is open and shaded by a large cafe umbrella - a great setting for an open air lunch with friends or family.
