Cafe Ruiz - Coffee Tour (Boquete, Panama)

Not being a coffee drinker, you would think that I wouldn't have much interest in touring a coffee farm. However,
Cafe Ruiz is a particularly interesting operation among the many independent Panama growers. Non only are they a family run business, but they subscribe to a more holistic way of producing coffee. They do not have clean straight rows of mountain-grown coffee. They tend to their coffee trees but they do not manicure the farms. They also plant shading trees to protect the coffee, and often that effort doubles as readily available food for the workers. We received a full tour of one farm, including the housing for coffee pickers. Cafe Ruiz is proud of their ranking by the ILO (International Labor Organization) as they meet or exceed the standards, providing opportunities for its employees to work towards home ownership and education for their children.
