Watch out for garden stakes!

By: Kristen
Aug 22, 2011
I had a very productive time at the ACGA conference in NYC.  Met lots of interesting and inspiring gardeners.  As you can imagine, I was antsy to get back into my own garden after 4 days away.  The plants were in need of some care and weeding.  I headed out to the victory gardens at lunchtime to do some work even though I was a bit tired from getting back late on Sunday night.  I worked hard and got lots done - and should have quit at that point.  However, I wanted to move some plant stakes around and then leaned in to pick up one more weed - that's when a stake just barely missed my eyeball and drove right under my eye and burst a blood vessel.  Luckily I have an amazing eye doctor who saw me right away and made me a follow up appointment for this morning.  The good news is that my vision is okay - the bad news is that it feels like someone punched me in the eye and it will probably look more like it in the coming days.  At least this is all just temporary.  Anyway, I write today to remind all my fellow gardeners (especially the ones like me who are in a rush at times) to be careful out there and protect your eyes!

I'm glad you are ok.  It always seems to happen when there is one more thing you want to do.  I hate to trim my climbing rose bushes and every year when I do it, I always think of my teacher friend who scratched her cornea when trimming her roses.  Take care, relax, and let it heal.

@Liz:Thanks Liz - the healing has begun...the bruising colors are getting prettier!

Oh I have come close just like that  a few times.

@Bonniecat:It is a bit scary to almost lose an eye.  I have seen other gardeners add large balls to the tops of the stakes, but that wouldn't look so good in my garden.  Have you figured out a safety solution?
