Planted the Potatoes!

By: Kristen
May 08, 2012
I planted my potatoes in a burlap coffee sack (purchased for 50 cents at Polcari's in the North End - if you live in Boston and don't know it, you should make a plan to drop in).  Two days prior I cut a couple of the seed potatoes in half so that the skin would have time to harden off before I placed them in the soil.  The process was pretty easy - I just covered them with about 4 inches of soil.  Now I am in the wait-and-see phase.  Hopefully within the next couple of weeks there will be some sprouts poking out from the top soil layer.

This looks like a cool technique for growing spuds. This is our second year for potatoes and we missed some when we dug them last year so have a few volunteers that I hated to yank so I put them in a big pot. I think your bag will work better since you can add soil and the bag will expand. We planted Peruvian Purple and Yukon Gold this year and the plants look great; can't wait to dig and eat some! No comparison with the kind that have been stored for months.

@krandolph:Hopefully it will work out...there is the plus that one won't lose any of the new potatoes or impale any when harvesting.  This is my first try with growing my own...they better be much better than store bought!  :-)

Looks like you will have some nice potatoes soon!

@Clenram:I do hope that's the case - I heard that the key is not allowing sunlight to hit the potatoes and not getting them too wet...we'll see if I am able to do it
