that's my father in the back - at this point we had already planted the dahlias, which were transported in those 3 empty bushel baskets

Dahlias come back to the city

By: Kristen
May 13, 2012
Each year my parents are the winter caretakers of my dahlias (3 full bushel baskets) - they store them in their cool and dry suburban basement from October until May.  When it is time to put them in the ground again, my father also supplies me with some annuals (snapdragons, impatiens, state fair zinnias, dusty miller), veggies (roma tomatoes, yellow pear tomatoes, red cherry tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, a variety of hot peppers, eggplant), and herbs (flat leaf parsley, sage, basil, rosemary).  My mother missed this year's event, but my sister filled in (and even survived the interesting smell of chicken poop fertilizer).  We finished up in a few hours.  Now it is time to just sit back and watch everything grow...and maybe pull some weeds here and there.
