| ACGA East Village Garden Tour - Miracle Garden Aug 20, 2011 | ||
"Miracle Garden was begun in 1983. It is a beautiful garden with a variety of plantings. A winding path leads visitors past a picnic table, benches, and ornamentals, and opens into a meeting area obscured from the street, making it a calm, cool respite on a hot summer day. The rear part of the garden also... ...see more

"This lovely garden shaded by mature trees is the former site of a synagogue. In 2004 GrowNYC worked with gardeners to widen and level pathways to accommodate wheelchairs. The garden got a new tool shed, wood fencing, birdhouse, and flagstone entry. This work was supported by the Evan Frankel Foundation. The... ...see more

"The 9th Street Community Garden was started in 1979 by Augustine (Nin) Garcia on a large fenced in vacant lot on the northeast corner of 9th Steet and Avenue C in The East Village, New York City. It is graced by a large weeping willow tree, evidence of an underground stream, which fortunately has made it... ...see more

I just registered at the ACGA conference in NYC!!! Looking forward to tomorrow's discussion regarding how social media helps and supports community gardening and parks...with Ray Oladapo-Johnson (Emerald Necklace Conservancy) and Mike Mennonno (Fenway Victory Gardens). Is anyone else attending the conference?
| 3 Garlics + 4 Hot Peppers...add the tomatoes! Aug 12, 2011 | ||
Last night I decided to make a galicky and hot tomato sauce...then laid it over artichoke ravioli...very tasty. The small garlic shown in the photo is from the Maintenance Collaborative garden - thanks guys! The elephant garlic was grown at Ward's Berry Farm (my father picked it up for me). And the third type I picked up... ...see more
| When life gives you blueberries... Aug 10, 2011 | ||
Well, you make blueberry cake, of course! My next door neighbor's grandmother picked blueberries in Michigan and overnighted them to Boston. I was lucky enough to be given part of the precious shipment, so I put them to use in a blueberry cake. Here's the recipe (from AllRecipes.com):
| The bees are doing what they do... Aug 09, 2011 | ||
It was a somewhat cool afternoon and the bees were either snoozing in the flowers or crawling around flower petals at a considerably slower pace than usual...perfect for the bee-parazzi!

The flowers are starting to come into their own...and they are lasting a long time in the house!
| What a harvest! Aug 06, 2011 | ||
I picked 3 large eggplant yesterday...plus some cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, and tons of herbs! I am still waiting on my plum tomatoes to ripen - could take another week or two.
| The cherries are comming...the cherries are coming...and the eggplant too! Jul 31, 2011 | ||
Finally the cherry tomatoes are coming in larger numbers...looks like I'll get at least a handful every couple of days for the next week - hopefully more after that! And the eggplant is looking large these days - perhaps I'll be able to pick that next week. My CSA issued the following eggplant recipe (looks good!):

I'm not a fan of eggplant, but I want to be. I want to grow them because they look so cute when they are growing. I have tried several recipes.....maybe, this will be the one!! Thank you. |
| Garden is looking lush! Jul 28, 2011 | ||

The garden is still looking pretty green - except for the cucumber plants (it is hard to keep those hydrated!). More dahlia varieties are starting to pop...one of my absolute favorites is the first photo that you see.
| Getting a little obsessed with the baby birds Jul 22, 2011 | ||

Here are a few photos from today...these baby birds are growing fast!!!
| These babies are so cute. I love the coloring. |
| Baby birds outside the window - just blowing in the wind Jul 21, 2011 | ||

I have been lucky enough to have been witnessing up close a bird family tend to its small family. Each morning the parents stop at my window sill with worms hanging from their beaks - they always quickly fly away before I can get my camera out. Yesterday I was able to catch them on video attending to the young ones...hopefully... ...see more
| Bastille Day bounty! Jul 14, 2011 | ||
Happy Bastille Day! Today I was fortunate enough to harvest 4 pickling cucumbers and 3 different types of hot peppers - those will be put to use in tomorrow's garden dinner (I'll go heavy on the cukes and light on the hot peppers!). I also found one ripe raspberry, which I promptly ate in the garden.

In the early spring the daffodils and tulips start to poke out of the ground...the 2 lilac bushes begin their blooms soon after. During mid-May, I begin to add veggie, herb, and annual plantings. Also, my parents bring in boxes of dahlia tubers that have been stored in the suburbs over the winter. By July the garden is coming up in full force and the tomatoes are ripening by early August. No matter what time of the gardening season, the patio is open and shaded by a large cafe umbrella - a great setting for an open air lunch with friends or family.
