Last week I found a little book that I'm going to use for a garden journal. I've been writing little notes on scrap sheets of paper or whatever is available when I find something interesting on YGS. Now it needs to be organized so I can find the information when I want it. So far, some of the topics are books I would like to read, fertilizers, seeds I would like to order next year, plants to be on the look out for, recipes, natural skin and hair concoctions, and a list of names and addresses of people I will be sending seeds, etc. to.
I have one just like it :) My first few pages I use as order form, what I ordered from where and all the deatils about how long shipping was and what the cost was. It has been helpful, you might want to put that info in too. Especially b/c you plant so much. I also have found valuable my gardening friends (people I have never met, but trade seeds with all over the country). Their name address and info about what I mailed to them and what I have received from them. That way I don't send them repeats and I have their address for remailing at my fingertips.Plus I keep track of history of seeds.
@linzelu100: Good suggestions.....I'll do that.....I needed to collect all my scraps of paper and organize my notes.....now I can just keep my garden journal by my computer so I can write in it when I need to.
@linzelu100:I have a garden journal I've been using to record what I plant, how I did it, and when each year along with wish lists of what I'd like to plant, and notes and facts I've picked up or read. I also sometimes record the weather or where the sun is during the year (since the sun orientation is important in my sometimes shady, sometimes sunny yard).I've found it to be very valuable to figure out what grows best and how to do it and when. It also helps me remember important things I've read that I would have otherwise forgotten.
Is that all it takes to get organized? Wow...No I don't think it would work for me Liz! :) But it is a great idea. Jess keeps a journal and sketches things he wants to do or ideas for drawings/paintings he would like to do. Sometimes he even puts a poem. I do everything on the computer. go figure!
@Clenram: i saw the journal at TJ Max and thought it was so cute.....I figured it would be better to write in it than on scraps of paper when I saw something on YGS that I wanted to remember.....plus I mostly use my laptop and I don't always stay in the same room.....so my journal will always stay with my laptop no matter where I am.
@Liz: I do a journal too... it's an app on my iPhone, LOL. If I see something here I screenshot it and save it in a folder. I always have my phone with me to jot notes,I can take pictures and I've always been good at losing things. A hardback journa... be nice to keep every year and be able to go back through and check things. I started my phone one so I could keep track of weird weath..., seeding, germination and planting dates in case I needed to change things next year.
@RoriTx It was either linzelu or another gardener on linzelu's glog that talked about their grandmother's journal and how they enjoyed going through it. This journal will be useful to me now and may end up being of interest to my grandchildren or great grandchildren some day.
Hmm...love the idea of using a garden journal. Seems like I can never find the little slips of paper I've written things on. I do use my calendar for some notes but it doesn't have enough room.
I'll go one better than Kristen...what would all of you like to see in a virtual notebook? What would it need to do to help you stay organized? Let's start a list here and then we'll build it!! Tom
