We have been noticing a lot of them here too - they seem to really like the cotoneasters in the front landscaping!

@PYehl:  Do you know what kind they are?  They have been in the lilacs all day.  I was planting leeks and this one landed and stayed long enough for me to get my camera which was close by and then take a few shots.

If I was my computer and not the phone I would give you the butterfly website. You can put your zip code in and they'll show all the butterflys by picture in your area

This website?   http://zipcodezoo.com/List/ButterflyFinder....asp

I was being lazy!  I've been doing so much research lately, I was hoping all I had to do was ask the question.  Will work on it in a little while.

@RoriTx Wow!  I've not used that website before.  I had the name of the butterfly in a few seconds.  Amazing!

@RoriTx: Also just liked them on Facebook.

It is a Red Admiral.  Nectar plants are Aster, Butterfly Bush, Common Milkweed, and Shasta Daisy.  I do have all 4 of these plants in my garden.  The host plant is False Nettle.

@Liz:I've found them to be really helpful. I just missed a Monarch the other day. I'm going to see how many photos I can collect this spring/summer and make a display board with my butterfly collection.
Liz replied about 1 year ago
@RoriTx  I think I like that site the best of all the butterfly sites I've been on.  A display board of all the butterflies you see in your area is a nice idea.  I never remember seeing a Red Admiral before and the gardens are filled with them this year.....yesterday and today.

@Liz: it's the same with that Zebra Swallowtail here. It said they were only as far west as Louisiana and not into Texas.

@RoriTx: Interesting.....I'll have to do a little research when I have some time.  I'm behind on answering comments, looking at gardens, etc., etc.  I need more hours in each day!!

My brain was thinking I know this butterfly. How cool, I hope to see some of these myself this year. Better yet I hope to capture one on camera! ;-))

@flower_lady:I found 2 of the Red Admiral this morning when I was out taking photos... by the time I would try to sneak up closer and get the camera ready - it would fly away.  =/

@PYehl: I've found if you use the video feature you can let it run and grab a still from it
Liz replied about 1 year ago
@flower_lady: I don't ever remember seeing the Red Admirals.  They are everywhere.....I've never seen that many butterflies at one time.

@PYehl:I was trying to do that with a big black butterfly with white on its lower wings.....was not successful.
Liz replied about 1 year ago
@RoriTx: I'll have to try that.  I wasted so much time chasing the Monarch last summer trying to get good photos.
RoriTx replied about 1 year ago
@Liz: there was a disturbing article on the monarchs being killed off because of Dow Chemicals new resistant strain of corn being developed for ethanol. What the farmers are spraying the fields with is killing off the butterflies milkweed.
Liz replied about 1 year ago
@RoriTx: I was reading that on Facebook the other day.  I find all of this very disturbing.....all these chemicals being approved without being fully tested.....it's like animals and humans are being the lab rats.
