@I_make_fertilize...: My husband made the playhouse for our kids when they were little. Now that they are no longer children, I put a small table and chairs up in the tower. My husband and I go up their in the evening with a glass of wine to watch the sunset.
@Betty: Thank you, Betty! I think both of us have put a lot of work into our gardens as well as our posts. Both of us have created gardens with our own distinctive personalities. Good luck!
@Groundskeeper: Thank you, we love our pond too. There are irises and cattails in the pond. You are right, the maroon tree is a Japanese maple. At some point, I will get my basket of labels out (I saved all of them over the years) and start tagging my photos.
@Clenram: Thanks.....I look forward to seeing more of your pond.....I love to see gardeners' ideas and how they use what they have.....I think gardeners are very creative people.
@Liz: Your comment "I love to see other gardeners' ideas..." sums up why we started Your Garden Show. To make a place where we can learn from each other, and inspire each other.
@Liz: I agree. It's fun (and inspiring to see what other gardeners are doing).Steven Wynbrandt and his West LA Garden has inspired to return to vegetable gardening. Well, Steven first, frugality second.
@Liz:Amen. I know hunters here in Iowa who think of hunting less as a sport and more as a way to eat safe meat. These are guys who grew up around big ag. You might think they'd be supporters. They're not.
that is just gorgeous! how long did it take to get the yard looking so lovely? i try to add something pretty to the house/yard every year, but it still seems sparse...
@alexdameron: Thank you! In July, we will have lived here for 28 years. When my kids were little, I added something each year. When the kids were older, that's when I started doing more! Now I get carried away!!
@Liz: You have summed up one big reason we built Your Garden Show. The other is to spread gardening because it's good for people, communities and our planet.
I am so inspired by your playscape! I actually had one given to me on Craigslist but I didnt have a large truck to pick it up. I was thinking of using one to grow watermelons on part of the ladder as a trellis. Just seeing this really makes me wish I didn't give up the playscape! Maybe I will buy a new one. ;-)
@ruthie: thanks. My husband built this for the kids when they were little. It had a slide (that part is gone now), one of the kids wanted a bridge, another wanted a pole, and then the little tower as they called it. Now they are all out of the house and it has become our playhouse. We go up to the tower on summer evenings to sit, drink a glass of wine, and watch the sunset. I have put window boxes up there and this year I want to paint a rug on the floor.
Liz: Great pic. I love poppies and have never been successful at growing them. Maybe I will try again this year. Did ou plant them from seeds or got them at a store?
@doggirl: Thanks.....Poppies are easy to grow in Michigan. When we first moved to our house, a friend gave me a small clump of her poppies. For years, I let the leaves brown and the pods go to seed before I cleaned out the garden. The poppies really multiplied for me. Now I clean out that garden as soon as they are finished blooming. I'm always digging out poppies out now because they spread to where I don't want them to be. I saw blue poppies at Longwood Gardens last year and am trying to grow them.....but so far have not been successful.
@doggirl: If you are interested in seeds, I could send you some in the fall. I collect lots of different poppy seeds and could also let a clump of the orange poppies go to seed. Put your address in my messages box, I'll write it down, and then I'll delete it.
That is beautiful! I've never planted poppies but I might have to after seeing this picture. I too would love to have a pond one day but right now I think my kids (3 and 1) would just use it as a pool:) !
@jtuggle: Thank you.....we didn't have a pond when our children were young.....too much to worry about unless it is small. i love poppies and they are easy to grow.
