@Patrick-TheGreenGardener...: The one on the left, my husband made. The tall one on the right was made by a garden club member's brother and she didn't want it any more...so now it belongs to us.
@Noviflowerchild...: In the vegetable garden, I had trouble with rabbits for the first time. They ate my pea pods and beans. In our lawn, we had a very bad infestation of voles since we didn't have cats to keep them under control. In the fall, my husband got 2 kittens from a friend; so hopefully this year the cats will keep them under control.
@lfin:We usually have one or two outdoor cats. People seem to think because we have a barn they can just drop off the cats they don't want. The cats would havee kittens and then things just got out of hand. When we finally lost our last cat,I said I didn't want any more. Last summer was the first summer in a long time where we didn't have cats, but that led to other problems...voles! Hopefully our news cats will take care of them this year.
@TomBohland: We had a guest speaker at one of our garden club meetings. The topic was "square foot gardening" and it was amazing how much you can harvest from a small garden.
@TomBohland: I gave my husband a book about Square Foot Gardening years ago, but we didn't really try it until this year. We decided to plant some of our veggies in grids rather than rows; will post some pix when it's up & going.
@BotanicalBrain: Thank you. The area in front of our barn was wasted space because it was all concrete. The first year we tried raised beds, the veggies didn't do very well because it was too hot with the concrete around the beds. So the second year, we bought a whole truck full of mulch....the fresh mulch that you are not supposed to use around trees, etc. - but it was cheaper and we needed a lot. The mulch kept the garden area cooler....now it's beautiful mulch and I really should use it and bring some new, fresh mulch in.
@MorningGloryGal...: So far, we've been lucky. My husband only has had to rebuild one of the beds. Some of the beds are about 7 years.....some 5 years old.....and others 3 years old. We kept adding when we decided we wanted to grow more vegetables.
