This garden is so "story book"!  I love my gardens and where I live, but some of the gardens on this site (yours included) really make me jealous or envious.  Your garden is the perfect story, no book needed.  I wish I would learn how to make stone walls.  I have always wanted to do it, and think it would be a fun hobby.  Hope to see more postings as your garden grows. Thank you for your kind words. It's not difficult building a stone wall, but it does take some muscle. For the most part, the stones in my wall were all dug out of the garden beds. It took five summers to complete the wall which is 30 ft long behind the main garden and a little under 4 ft. tall. I built the extension to the left in a few hours, also about 30 ft. long. I love working with stone, but it's backbreaking.

Wow, you actually built that wall yourself, now I am more impressed!  I really thought it had probably been built 100 years ago... stone walls are not something that seem to be being built these days.  I love it.  I am really going to have to try something with rocks this year.  Maybe just some posts.  I do not have many big rocks here so I would have to go rock hunting, or maybe send my daughter to the hills with her horse and a big bag.  I am not as strong as I use to be, but if I could do just a little bit at a time it would be so great!  What kind of mortar did you use?  Do you just mix cement?   (less)
