A woodchuck got the best of me Jul 17, 2012
Activity-icon-status

On Thursday as I was having an enjoyable lunch with my husband at a local family restaurant, I came home to find that a woodchuck had had a pleasant lunch himself in my wonderful vegetable garden. He had eaten most of the leaves of my brocolli plants and as you can see he didnt stop there. By mid-Sunday he not only ate on... ...see more

Oh, no! Those critters are so destructive! We had one make breakfast, lunch, and dinner of some of our garden, and make a mess digging burrows in the dirt floor of part of our barn the first year... more »

That was one hungry critter ... so sorry about your loss ... know it must be discouraging.
JMTKMS replied 10 months ago
I wonder what their food of choice is?  Maybe you could get some seeds and grow it for them at the furthest away boundaries from your garden.  Maybe then, they would not feel the desire... more »

Somebody had to do it Jul 06, 2012
Activity-icon-status

It was a darn, dirty job but somebody had to do it. That somebody was my husband, Rick. He spend all yesterday afternoon removing the skin from the garlic scapes. Better him than me, lol. I must say, "He did quite a beautiful job."

PYehl replied 11 months ago
what are you gonna do with all of them now?  I have to go out and pick mine too
MaryLarson replied 11 months ago
Yes. We don't rinse the vinegar off the scapes/cloves either. Just drain them, then put them in a jar and fill it with olive oil. Need to keep it in the refrigerator though. I use the oil in my c... more »

A Wonderful Saturday Jul 01, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I decided to take a break from my bookkeeping, employee scheduling, housework and even gardening today. It has been too hot! It's Saturday and I had an enjoyable morning with my husband, Rick, walking through Manitowoc's Farmer's Market and because it is also Mariner's Weekend here, we were able to watch a small group of craftmen... ...see more

What a wonderful picture that makes in my mind... Great way to enjoy your day off...  :) :)
SweetDomesticity replied 11 months ago
We pretty much took the weekend off of everything as well, due to the heat.  We did have to do some watering and harvesting, but took care of that either early in the morning or after the sun had set.... more »

Bumble Bee filling his pollen sacs Jun 23, 2012
Activity-icon-status

This was the most pleasant surprise as I was taking photos of this dainty flower, white Beard-Tongue, a bumble bee stopped by to collect some pollen. Click the slides quickly and see the bee landing on the flower...

Wow, I always cut my rhubarb flower heads off as soon as I find them - I had no idea they got so tall!
MaryLarson replied 11 months ago
We had one or two desserts from it, then let it go, go, go. I will end up being the one who eats 2/3 of the pan :-). Can't have that. I must say, this was unusually big this year.
MaryLarson replied 11 months ago
Yes, that's a good idea...rhubarb salsa.
