I'm a lifetime gardener who has finally gotten a small patch of ground to really attempt to grow all my own produce.  Behind an 8' ft deer fence (20' x 100') I have put in a small fruit orchard, berry bed, citrus hedge and now 5 4 x 8 raised beds.  I will be "farming" these beds with the help of a "chicken tractor", which my husband will build before our chickens come in April (when I return from my Mom's 90'th birthday party).

I live on the Central Coast of Calif where we can garden year round in most years.  My new "citrus hedge" is also my winter garden, where I've planted 2 types of radishes, carrots, fava beans, sugar snap peas, garlic, turnips and basil (still have 1 plant that has tolerated the cold).  Two of the 5 beds have recently been planted, one solely in lettuces and the other with more cool weather crops.  My shed also has good light, so I just started seeds which I will transplant when the weather warms up.  It includes the normal tomato, pepper, but also includes Okra and Lovage.

I've been a certified Master Gardener for 10 years and have recently discovered the CA Rare Fruit Growers and also food growing by the permaculture method (food forest).

I LOVE talking gardening with people and how to grow without nasty chemicals.  I am a BIG fan of edible landscaping, but after one year living here, the deer, rabbits and gophers have convinced me they are not willing to share and so we had to garden within the fenced in area - bummer!

slip sliding away Arroyo Grande, CA

My garden is on a SW facing slope and quite a challenge.  Sometimes I feel being part billy goat would help getting up and down the garden.  We have stairs and a path planned, but until then, I take it one step at a time - carefully! » more

We're trying to grow as much of our own food as we can. It's year 1 on this property. After an almost rainless winter, our small continuous harvest feels gratifying. But it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Hi Nellilein.....I need a little advice. I got an email from moveon.org this morning about starting a petition. I would really like to start a petition to our governor/state legislature on the labeling of GMO foods in Michigan.  It asks for 1 to 2 sentence descri... and was wondering what you thought would be the best way of presenting this since you were involved in the prop 37 in CA.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you, Liz

Hi Nell,I am only about an hour and 10 minutes from Eau Claire, WI actually.  Fountain City is right on the Mississippi river about an hour north of La Crosse and an hour+ west and south of Eau Claire.  It's perched on the bluffs along the river and has been referred to as a tiny San Fransisco (the population is only about 900).  That little volunteer Forget-Me-Not now covers about 10 squ. feet of space!  I love it.  Maybe my cats will help spread it around as your dog did.  :)Heather

@EagleValleyGarde...:That sounds like beautiful country!  My mom (who turned 90 this year) lives with one of my sisters near Chetek, WI.  When I visit I fly to Mpls, get a shuttle to Eau Claire and then my brother-in-law picks me up for the last one drive to their house.  They live on 40 acres, most of which is left alone.  Would be lovely to walk through if not for the ticks - they have tons and tons!  You could also spread your Forget-me-not by digging it up and transplanting in other places.  It's a great ground cover and lives beautifully underneath shrubs and small trees.
