I decided to take apart an old hoop house frame I made the other year as it wouldn't work in my new design of the garden anyhow - so that gave me enough 2x4s to finish putting the frame together. Last night all I was able to do was put together the top & bottom framing - but needed wood for the upright connectors. Mo had to help me flip the top onto the bottom as I 1st connected the uprights to the top. The part in the front that is 'boxed' will be where the nesting boxes and food/water will go. That will have a door on the outside and inside (to the run) and well as the entire roof will be a lid so we can get to nesting boxes and add food to feeder. This tractor will only be used during the day as their real coop is in the barn - so the tractor will be put up against the barn opening to let them into it, then we will close the outside door while we move the tractor to the spot in the yard they will feast on that day.... and then open the inside door for them to go to the run. The run will be covered in chicken wire, but there will be no bottom to it, so we have to keep them in the 'box' when we move it. I will also be putting a shade cloth over the top of the run as chickens don't like to be hot. Thinking about putting in foam board on the inside of the box as well to keep that cooler in the summer. Will be painting the box area since its plywood that will need protection from the elements. Probably paint it red to match the barn. Now off to the hardware store as I have run out of screws... =/
@Liz:I put another photo up last night that shows little more progress. Hoping to have it mostly done today - other than the coats of paint I want to get on it. We picked up some side wall vents to add to the box area - that way there is more air circulation in the heat of summer. I can't wait till its done and see how the hens react to it!! =)
