Kelp & Squash bugs?? Yesterday
Activity-icon-status

I bought Kelp Meal last month from that Ohio Earth Food store... and was doing more research on it... found this:

"Sprinkle a small handful of kelp meal early in the growing season around and on the base of squash plants to help deter squash bugs.  Do this every 10 days where squash bugs are a problem."

Interesting!  Might have to give this one a try - our community garden was a hot mess of squash bugs last year, so anything is worth a try!

I'll try anything - those and cucumber beetles are always my worst enemy!  I'm also planting later this year with those - seeing if changing the timing makes any difference.  Cucs won't be plante... more »

The paper mulch rolls... May 21, 2013
Activity-icon-status

So i used the roll of paper mulch on a few of the beds to keep weeds down - it will degrade right into the soil in a couple months so nothing to clean up.  So far I'm liking it - but today the big winds came in and I realized that while parts of the areas don't have things planted yet so there isn't anything holding the paper...

I've been totally intrigued by this, looking at your photos of your planting progress - thanks for the link!

Thanks for the link! I could see this paper mulch becoming very useful for the walkways in our community garden plots.

@PYel They bring in loads of quality mushroom compost to our community garden that I use like mulch. It's well-composted and water permeable, so it works beautifully. Still, it sometimes helps to have an e... more »
Finicky Goats?? May 21, 2013
Activity-icon-status

So tonight I was able to get the worst of the beds weeded... and I looked over and noticed the chard was really starting to go to seed - so I hacked it pretty good.  I know the hens LOVE the chard - so thought oh I bet the goats will go crazy over it.  Nope - totally stuck their noses up to it...  Is this odd?  Do anyone...

Tonight's excitement May 20, 2013
Activity-icon-status

So was gone all day to this and that.  Last event was my best friend's little girls birthday party.  On the way home I told Mo there was a new vineyard / winery that just went in around that area last year and they supposedly spent millions on it - wasn't only a few miles off the path so we decided to go check it out.  Well... ...see more

I looked yesterday and don't see any babies yet.  They probably don't want to come out in all the wind. It started out calm yesterday.

Planting time!! May 17, 2013
Activity-icon-status

Of course we all know - its not the planting that takes up all the time - its the bed preparations!  Tonight I had to prep 3 more beds (turned over and raked out), then added the paper mulch and stapled to the sides, and for the main tomato bed I have red plastic mulch on top of the paper mulch.  It doesn't sound like a lot... ...see more
