I am an artist-etcher and painter- and live in Italy, in Umbria. My 1000 year old house is in a medieval walled village that has prehistoric origins, and is situated o a hill overlooking the Tiber valley. I don't have a garden, but have a small terrace where I cultivate a few flowering plants: roses, geraniums, jasmine, petunias, amaryllis, a lemon tree etc. A virginia creeper covers part of the terrace, which is very hot in summer and also windy. I try to create an intimate, colorful "outdoor living room" for meals and friends. my web site: http://web.mac.com/patotricoli/PatriciaSmith/works.html

Scarzuola Italy

Scarzuola, located in Umbria, is the creation of Tommaso Buzzi, an architect who bought an ancient Franciscan monastery and its grounds in 1956, which he first restored before going on to plan and build his “ideal city”. He worked on this for the next 20 years,... » more

my terrace in June, 2010 Italy

My terace is very hot and sunny AND very windy. Not many plants like it, but petunias, herbs, roses, wild strawberries and succulents, jasmine and a lemon tree-and of course geraniums- are some of the survivors. » more

Blue Buoy-a painted garden (landscape) Granges sur Lot, France

I spend part of my summers in an ancient abbey on the Lot river in Fance. The river is very quiet and beautiful, and last year I decided to try to capture it's spirit in a painting. It is an oil painting on linen, 60" x 32".  » more

    Yeah, well i'm sure you've heard that mark twain quote 'the coldest winter i ever spent was summer in san francisco'. it is based on fact. the warmer it gets everywhere else in california, the colder it gets here. it really hasnt been too bad though. i got outside all of yesterday for a lovely hike and a bit of nature time and it was great! wish i could be in otricoli for the fireflies this time of year. its always so magical! hope to see you soon! m

    You are living my dream! I was trained as a realistic artist but never studied portraiture. On my bucket list, I want to go to Italy and study for a year and eat, sleep and breath painting. I love your terrazza and your work is exquisite! So glad to connect!

    @Cynthia:
    Somehow I missed you post! I hope you get a chance to come to Italy to paint! There are really good schools for figurative art in Florence, and if I had the time, I'd go myself. I think you never stop learning. If you do come over, let me know, and we can get together! Sorry to be so late in answering-

    Your Terrazza is even more beautiful this year. I can't believe it is so bright and that spring is so far along in Italy: we are still wearing the coats we have had on since November!
