This area is almost totally shaded & had been totally overrun by lily of the valley & a few ferns  when we moved in. Although I love lily of the valley, this area was unruly & so overrun it was choking itself out. It took us a good 2 weeks to dig it all out, hacking through a good 8-inch thickness of compacted roots the length of the garden. It was nuts! We managed to get it down to just a couple widely spaced plants & put in some big planting whiskey barrels.
