Beans! Aug 08, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I have beans! Eleven of them. All four varieties are producing, although only a few of the Early Bush are ready for picking today.
The first of the Indigo Rose tomatoes is changing color, too. :)

Hooray for beans. The start of what I hope is a great bean harvest for you.

Giant Zipper Aug 03, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I'm installing a giant zipper in my garden. A few years ago, I happened across this pallet of tile-faced concrete blocks at a thrift store for $25. (Someone had demolished a wall.) I'm sinking them flush with the ground as a barrier between the new vegetable/herb bed and the lawn which the lawn mower can run on top of. It got... ...see more

Oh wow. That is a lot of work but it will make mowing easier and it should help to keep the grass out of the garden.

That is a good idea!
What's germinating, blooming, fruiting Aug 02, 2012
Activity-icon-status

The cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots are germinating. The nasturtiums are blooming. There are itty bitty tomatoes on Indigo, Grape, and Sweet 100.

Good for you, you have new sprouts!  I wanted to start some broccoli and brussels, but I just keep putting it off.  Not sure I am ready for a Fall garden this year.  I do usually plant a few... more »

The jungle has swallowed up the Pirate Duckies! They certainly provide a gauge for how much the plants have grown in a month. :)

Little tasks Jul 29, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Spent the day doing little stuff I've been neglecting. Started broccoli and cauliflower seeds in nursery pots. Planted a rosemary and a Russian sage I got off the clearance rack a month or so ago and harvested some while I was at it. Transplanted the eggplants that were in the way when i built the raised beds. Waded in the pond... ...see more

Dragonflies Jul 28, 2012
Activity-icon-status

This is pretty cool. I was wading in my pond to clean out the pump filter and prune off the dead waterlily leaves, and I kept finding these large insect exoskeletons on the undersides of the leaves. I puttered about musing on what might be shedding its skin in my pond, and it finally occurred to me: Dragonflies! Sure enough,... ...see more

How very cool!  We went to a 4-H meeting once and it had a presentation of different life cycles of bugs...  the dragonfly was included.  I remember thinking what unusual creatures they were... more »
