Our progress on the garden tilling

A Beautiful April Day on the Farm

Apr 07, 2012

We were blessed with another beautiful day today - even warmer and sunnier than yesterday. We made some more good progress on the garden tilling, with Dave hauling out wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of very well aged / composted manure from the southeast corner of our barn.

We're slowly but surely reclaiming that corner of the barn, where the previous owners apparently kept some type of animal, probably pigs first and later goats, somewhere around 10 years ago. It's been untouched since. Dave worked really hard, removing about half of the wall of the makeshift room, and hauled out quite a few wheelbarrows of the contents, which I tilled into the garden. We're excited that we're getting closer to having that space to put to good use in the barn, once we get it cleaned out.

We've now got over half of the garden tilled, and the half that's left should go quickly since the rows keep getting shorter because of the shape of the space. Might seem like slow progress, but it's not real fast going with our little front tine tiller.

Another one of our does is showing signs of imminent delivery - she started pawing at the ground ("nesting"), and her udder is really filling with milk. We took a break from tilling to do evening chores and get a kidding stall ready for her, just in case.

After a delicious early Easter dinner of lamb chops, sweet potatoe fries, and brocolli with a cheese sauce Dave made with some of our goat cheese, we're getting ready to relax in front of the first bonfire of the season, with the only interruption frequent checks on Barb to see if she's going to deliver her kids tonight.

Happy Gardening, and Happy Easter, everyone!
