Plans to expand my small garden with two, 4'x4' raised beds on each side
  Magnify

Tonight's To Do List:

Apr 17, 2012
My brother is coming over tonight to help me build two 4'x4' expansion beds next to my small garden (the former sandbox)!  We've made two other attempts to get this done this spring, but we've been rained out both times (boo and double boo).  Today is a beautiful, sunny, 60+ degree day, so it looks like it will finally happen!  The photo (obviously from several months ago) shows my plans - I'm hoping that it will make the garden a more visually interesting feature in the yard and give me a little extra growing space!  I'm planning to dedicate one of the new beds to a three sisters planting (Calico Popcorn, Cherokee Trail of Tears Beans, and Sugar Pie Pumpkins).
We'll also be driving over to the city's public works facility to pick up some free compost (they compost all of leaves the street sweepers pickup each fall and make it available for residents at no charge once it's ready to be used).  I'll be working that into the soil, along with some manure, which should make my plants happy once they get in the ground :)
If there's still some daylight left, I might even try to get my onion and shallot sets in the ground tonight along with the pea trellis and some peas!  If not, you know what I'll be doing the rest of this week :)

Fingers crossed for you!

@RoriTx: Thanks!  We still could have used another hour of daylight, as we moved the last few wheelbarrow loads of compost and dirt in the dark, but it was a fun and productive night.  Looking forward to planting peas, onions, shallots, beets, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and a couple of other things over the next few days!

Is that still snow?

@Clenram: This was one of the few times we had snow on the ground this winter - sometime in February, I think.  Last year there were still patches of ice/snow along the fence in April!

Now I read your post!  Sounds like you are planting some fun plants.

@Clenram: Thanks!  I'm looking forward to getting a few things growing outdoors now - yippee!
