Last night I decided to start on preparations for the next round of seed starting.  I’m planting an obscene number of tomato plants this year (not entirely all for me;  I’m starting a few for some friends and family as well) and though I’m not quite ready to start them yet, I know it’s going to...

How many different varieties will you grow?  I'm loving reading all the comments from gardeners who are anxious to get started.  I wish I could get my friends, including my garden club friends on... more »

Have you used the news paper before? I'm making my starter pots out of newspaper this year and have never done them before. Any advice?

milliesgarden replied 3 months ago
I would love to try the newspaper pots. Ooooo thanks for posting the instructions. I also decided to try a few cherry tomato varieties for the farmer's market this year. I'm trying some roma and a few others like the Ferris wheel.

Days 8 and 9 brought exponential germination!  Every variety now has at least one seed germinating.  The leaders are now in the "inch worm" phase, trying to shed their heavy seeds.

I see you pretty much already answered my question I asked on one of your new sets.  I'm very tired right now and didn't remember reading above comment. The drive was fine for the first hour and a hal... more »

No worries, I have the same problem sometimes :)  Wow, sounds like an eventful travel day! Glad you made it safe and sound.  Crocuses and daffodils?  You're killing me! :)  We've got a snowstorm bearing down on us tonight.

2013 Garden Preview:  Multi-Colored Tomato Edition

In addition to the paste tomatoes I’m growing this year, I have a few other selections I’m trying out. I fully expected it to be much harder to narrow it down to a reasonable number, but these four actually rose to the top of the...

Doesn't Costoluto Genovese sound good?  It will be fun to compare notes!  I'm going to give it another couple of weeks before I start my tomatoes.  Since it's so hard to predict if we'll hav... more »

Thanks!  It will be interesting to see what the flavor of Purple Calabash is like!  I feel your pain on the waiting -  our typical frost free date is around Mother's Day, but there have been... more »

2013 Garden Preview: Paste Tomato Edition

For years I have been growing Burpee’s Big Mama Hybrid as my main salsa-making tomato.  They have performed incredibly well for me over the years, producing bumper crops of large, meaty roma tomatoes under a variety of conditions (average...

Looking forward to seeing the results of your trials. I am planning to try Amish Paste this year too.
Liz replied 3 months ago
I am also trying the San Marzano Lungo No. 2.  It will be interesting to see if you find a tomato comparable to the Big Mama Hybrid.

2013 Garden Preview:  Fun Stuff Edition

I think it’s kind of fun to plant one or two things each year that are just for fun: a little outside the box, a little bit experimental, something completely new and fun to watch grow alongside the “usual” selections.  And if they do well and ...
