The planting of The salad tub garden

The Salad tub garden in a garden

Mar 09, 2012
3 heirlooms all in one for a Zap & Zing salad delight. I planted these in mind of thinning's as well as an indoor source of salad. I will transplant more mature thinning's to the outdoor main garden. In a way, the salad tub acts as seed flat AND early salad clipping source.
Planted in the shape of a target with the Red romaine in the center main circle.{normal maturity 70 days}
The next circle is planted with French Breakfast Radish {28 days}
with our outer circle planted with Speckled Butterhead lettuce { 55 days}.

The romaine takes the longest for maturity but I snip leaves from growing heads as needed instead of waiting for a full market style head. Also to be done with the Speckles.
My tray of the last few years became a "snatched" snow play toy, alas making the need for new wide & shallow containers. Thankfully I had this beat up Galvanized bucket from the chicken run which was the extra source of water inside their coop under a heat lamp. I inherited a very vintage/antique chicken waterer from a friend which will replace the bucket. After all, plastic waterer's should never be near the heat lamps. What a disaster that could be.
This week will see more of the main garden plants to be seeded in their flats. It feels like a dream to be almost Spring. The teasing of the sun & warmth mixed with the chill of winds & sneaking snow clouds. I savor this time of renewal coming upon us.
Looking forward to that first salad in late April/early May!
Now on the hunt for More containers to Salad plant <3 !

@veebee:I was so surprised at how well they grew when we discovered they were growing ON TOP of the weed barrier cloth from a few seeds left in a packet by my children who laid it down next to their row. I couldn't believe my eyes. I rarely ever do things "by the book".lol. I think it keeps life far more interesting. ; ) And a most splendid Happy Near Spring to you.

Love the design concept too!  I need to get some started in the basement greenhouse as well for transplanting.  This weekend I will be sitting down figuring out what all else I need to get started.  Yay for Spring!!!!

@PYehl: We began making patterns with the lettuce & such a few years back. My oldest had done a peace symbol in the corner of her garden and the plan is to do a swirl this year in the main garden with the beets in center & outer ring. I have LOTS to start but need to time things a bit being I am helping my baby brother & his pregnant wife move almost 30 hrs from their current based location sometime next month. I'll be gone a week so I am making my husband work with my almost 13 yr old daughter on maintaining my glog. Being their are my garden hands, they can help tend the little shop of horrors in my absence as well as my "routine" on here. bwahahaha. VERY stoked over this weather & Spring. Still feel like it's a dream state after pining away through the winter for that first spring soil smell.
