Our Bee's Buzzing over the Blossoms of our Weeping Cherry trees
  1 of 3 Magnify

Work in the garden, Lovage Hunting & tomato contemplation

Mar 21, 2012
I began the morning with the intent to at least weed the North side fence. The grass & weeds began creeping past the pickets, a few inches into the garden. I accomplished the North side & a little over half of the south side. I also discovered a few comfrey plants by one post I must have transplanted last year.
I am on the hunt for Lovage. Mine did not come back this year {tilling incident} and I have no one I have given it too close by anymore to get some back. : ( I MUST get lovage. I am all out from the harvest last year. So I'm adding it to my list with Rhubarb...
Ming is such a wonderful Garden companion. She discovered today that she fits perfectly in the Hypertuffa Burdock leaf I made a few years ago. It was getting Hot so she sprawled out perfectly in it. As soon as I moved out of her sight to grab the camera, she hopped up to follow me. I SO should have worn my apron. No pockets on my sundress for the camera.
The weeping Cherry trees are even more beautiful this afternoon. The white blossoms are brighter & bigger then ever. The photo shared earlier is from this morning. I should have waited until this afternoon being the sun highlights them so drastically. The chickens were going crazy for all the insects the blossoms have attracted. My husband calls it cheap entertainment watching them zip all over chasing the bugs. I LOVE watching them. lol
Look at all the pollen on the bee's! And it's only mid March... if this weather keeps up, the Honey harvest may be HUGE! I need another Hive in here ASAP. I'm just not sure I can swing it with my  low budget. I still need to buy a Mower!
The chickens were out & about. I love letting them free range all day in the warmer months and of course they love it too.
Their favorite spot is under one of the pine trees along the "short woods", as I call it. Its about 90 ft long and about the same wide before a vehicle path separates it from the rest of the property line woods.
This is where they hang out taking Dust baths. Staying cool yet enjoying the sunshine. Ming the Chicken herder can be caught hanging out with them by those trees. Sometimes when I go searching for her and resort to calling out, I find she was right there all along. Just blending in with the chickens being they are of close size & I do after all, have 4 whites out of the 13 chickens.
I worked a little more on the bentwood trellis. It did not come out as nice as I hoped but then again, it is to be covered in climbing plants. Kiss me over the garden gate & Telephone Pole peas {which I am shortly plopping on my hat & getting them in the ground. No excuses!}
Speaking of hats, Ming has now taken a new signal to mean I am going somewhere. Normally the rattle of the keys has her begging for a car ride. Today, it was the hat. As soon as I would plop i on my head, she perked up & RAN for the back door...
I am so happy I have her as my daytime company in this big empty house. All the kids are in school now so it makes for some very boring times. Good thing I have her, the chickens & gardens to keep me on my toes.
Sweetest dreams,
~Tammie

What do you do with Lovage?
UnusualFarmChick replied about 1 year ago
@MEGarden: I's a GREAT celery substitute. { for diabetics, it is used as a salt substitute for flavor} It's not a super strong celery taste. It's milder but it has a little extra something I have to put my finger on for distinguishing. I never bother growing celery since I began growing lovage so many years ago. After dicing it up, I dry it for seasoning. Sometimes I grind it from the pieces to sprinkle onto green/yellow beans, peas, etc. My husband just brought me home the latest issue of Mary Jane Farmgirls magazine & they have a little article in there on it as well as a recipe for Lovage & garlic scape soup.PLUS they are mothers nature Bloody Mary straws. Can't get more green then a lovage straw vs plastic.  ; )

Enjoyed your glog!  Interesting about the lovage.

@Liz: Thank you.Lovage is one of those herbs that seems to not be well known unless your gardener. even then it has to be someone in the "circle of gardeners" bringing it in.

What a wonderful picture you paint with words.  I feel like I had a nice visit at your place!
I wanted to ask if you took the black and white photo that is your profile picture?  It is nice!
UnusualFarmChick replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram: Your so sweet. I wish I could claim it is mine, but the photo is an actual original from the 1930's. I have it in my inspiration files for later on when I have a couple to experiment in the row boat with.
