Insane temperatures Jan 27, 2012

Today when I woke up it was 63F. That is just insane. All together the winter is way too mild. I am worried about pest and diseases for the upcoming season, but I am excited about starting seeds soon!

First freeze Dec 02, 2011
Activity-icon-status

I guess we had our first freeze last night. Not bad considering it is December.
Dropped off almost 100 lbs of sweet potatoes at school. They'll be used for lunch on Tuesday.

Just got word that our sweet potato harvest will be served in the cafeteria next week!

That is so cool! I'm sure your gardeners will be thrilled. Can you influence how they'll be served (no added sweetener)? I find mine are so sweet they don't need any more. Enjoy!
Nature is confused Nov 28, 2011

Our weather had been incredible; temperatures are in the 60s!!! I won't complain because it is just fantastic to be outside and see the garden continue to produce. Unfortunately, I also saw some trees yesterday that are starting to bud out again. Our neighbor has a cherry tree in full bloom. That can not be good.

Our weather in Michigan has been much like yours.  I have also noticed some of the trees and shrubs are confused and have started to bud.  We've just been lucky with the weather.....I doubt that it will last much longer.
Thanks! Nov 22, 2011

The mild weather continues and our garden keeps on giving! Pretty amazing considering it is the end of November.

Gift! Nov 14, 2011
Activity-icon-status

68 degrees on a Monday in the middle of November: what a gift! It sure makes up for the snow on October 29th.

We are spoiled Nov 10, 2011

Another gorgeous day! Tomorrow the temps are going way down and it is going to rain. So we harvested more lettuce, bok choy and Chinese cabbage. Haven't added it all up yet, but it was a lot and there is still more! This time we gave it to the teachers and staff and some of the students. Lots of happy faces.

It is a gorgeous fall day, in the 60s. Time to harvest some more lettuce and perhaps plant some garlic!

Fantastic Day! Nov 03, 2011
Activity-icon-status

We had a fantastic day in the garden! Not only did students harvest salad for tomorrow, they also cleaned up the beds and sowed winter rye. I know, a bit late, but better late than never.

Salad Harvest Nov 02, 2011
Activity-icon-status

Today, 6th and 8th grade classes are harvesting lettuce, carrots, peas, peppers and broccoli from the garden. Tomorrow all this will be served at a salad bar in the cafeteria;  Food services is bringing in the salad bar equipment, because this is not a standard feature of our cafeteria.

If we have enough time, we will sow winter... ...see more

Frost Oct 31, 2011
Activity-icon-status

First frost and freeze both in one night. I guess that is it for the tomatoes and peppers. Hopefully the lettuce is okay under its blanket.

Well thank you so much!!! Just looked at your garden pictures and I am very, very impressed! We just needed to get rid of some grass; you had quite a job on your hands. Amazing.

Sweet Potato Harvest: 97 lbs. That bring the total for this season, so far, to right around 950 lbs. I think we will reach our goal of 1000 lbs!
