Katie's Journal: An update on our little babies in the greenhouse

Mar 27, 2012
My favorite part of the day is watering every morning. Heading to the greenhouse, the early morning light, all the new growth that seems to have happened over night (well I guess it seems to because it does happen over night!). The seedlings are all growing strongly. We are still waiting for the peppers, eggplant and a few varieties of tomatoes to pop up. I'm getting antsy, wanting to see them all, but seeing the progress of all these little guys just fills me with anticipation for what more is to come. Here are some photos from the greenhouse this afternoon.

You've inspired me to finally start some tomato, eggplant and basil seeds; I've been holding off, waiting for the new moon and the next water sign, but at least I'll stir up the potting mix (a combo of worm castings, peat moss and organic potting soil) and wash all the plastic pots from last year. Then on Friday night when the moon goes into Cancer I'll get planting...

All those little seedlings are great, what a sign of life.  And yes, I love seeing how much they have grown each morning.  I am always doubly impressed with looking at them in the evening and realizing that they grew again and I did not even see it!  The Envy soybeans are "growing like weeds", and I feel sure that if I had nothing else to do that I could sit and watch them closely a... see them grow!  It all just makes me smile!

@krandolph:  So, planting by the moon?   I have heard ot it my whole life, but never really paid attention.  And what are you referring ... "the next water sign"?  Just curious.

@JMTKMS: The zodiac signs are broken down into the elements of earth, air, water and fire. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces; Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are very fertile moments and are a good time to plant above ground leafy plants while Earth signs are also fertile but are associated with the roots of the plant, the moon in an Earth sign is a good time to plant root crops or transplant your crops so that they have good root structure when moved out into their final destinations in the garden! Air signs are generally "dry and barren" but flowers are associated with Air signs and I have read Libra is a good time for planting flowers and herbs. I have also read that onions like a moon in Aquarius and melons a moon a Gemini, picky picky! We are trying our hand at planting my the moon this year too. Each gardener really needs to decide how in depth they want to take it. For me planting the melons on a Gemini moon is a little more planning than I am apt to (especially when we are so eager to just plant!); we are trying to keep in mind waxing and waning moons (above ground leafy plants like new and waxing moons while root crops like waning moons) and keep an eye on Water and Earth signs. We will keep everyone posted on how we do with this venture. Let me know what you think of the whole planting by the moon idea!

Kate, your pops is proud of all you have learned from his lunar planting methods (or is that loony? opinions vary). Can't argue with his success rate though. He's letting me decide on when to plant our tomato & eggplant seeds this year so time will tell if we should have done it back at the Pisces new moon...

I think it all sounds very interesting.  I will have to do more research to get the timing down.  I know my Grandparents talked of "moon cycles" and planting, and I believe there is alot to it.  To bad so many have forgotten the old ways.  I will watch how you all do, and study for next year and see if I can incorporate it into my planting schedule.  Thank you for the information.

This is all very fascinating.  Is there a good book out on this topic?
krandolph replied about 1 year ago
@Liz:try this one:http://www.amazon.com/Llewellyns-2012-Moon-Sign-Book/dp/0738712086/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333451359&sr=1-1I haven't read it but now you gave me the idea to order it for my hubby's Earth Day birthday... Llewellyn is a very well-known astrologer so it should be good & it gets good reviews. Much of what we do is based on oral history (one of our family friends is an astrologer who has passed on a lot of things verbally).
