New to the land of snails and I didn't realize snails demolished seedlings! Caught one finishing off a tomato plant. No way, not anymore, not on my watch.
Do you just pick them off when you see them? Seems to me the old-timers used to put out shallow pans of beer to trap them; anybody have experience with the slimy critters?
We only had small snails in Western Washington, and whatever slug bait we used, would seem to kill the snails as well. But,
When I went camping once, there were slugs everywhere. I do not sleep in a tent, so I laid out my tarp and put my sleeping bag on top. Everyone told me I would be covered in slugs... they all slept in tents. Well, I decided to try and lift up the edge of the tarp, so I put little rocks and sticks in the right places so that my tarp edges did not touch the ground. In the morning, I could see alot of slug trails leading to my tarp, but they all turned and left.... But, the people in tents were all screaming..."yuck!!!! Slugs!!!". Some how the slugs found a surface to follow into their ten..., but they could not get a grip on my tarp. Just a thought to ponder???
Hey, I put "snails" in the new YGS search function and found this from Sophora:http://www.yourgardenshow.com/users/Sophora/gardens/old-charm/activities/85249?&&&view=year
@Kristen: We moved some of the seedlings; the snails seemed to only be getting to the ones that were on a concrete slab in the greenhouse as opposed to on the table or shelving units. Seems to have worked, no more damage so far. @krandolph: Mom, you know we don't waste good beer 'round these parts! @JMTKMS: Thats a slug story to go down in the books, for sure!
