We are happily still managing to eat 80% out of the garden (ok, a good deal of our meals are potato based!) and today I start knocking away at my kitchen to-do list. Included are, drying tomatoes, yellow p... more »

How did I miss "Gail's Maritimers' chocolate mint beet cake"? That sounds amazing; next year we're going to figure out how to get a decent beet harvest!

Well, it was a trip well traveled; we gazed and ate (and ate and ate and ate) and danced and sang and swam and laughed. Oslo to Berlin to Munich to Sarajevo to the Croatian coast. I'm posting photos of some garden/plant related highlights.
Berlin may be my soul-mate city (and luckily Alfredo loved it as much as I did!). The... ...see more

Katie and Alfredo, I thought of you both often on your journey! Sounds fabulous, and memorable!

You saw some off-the-beaten-path places, which is more interesting than the typical tourist sites in many ways; also less expensive, right? You have made me curious to read some Bosnian and Croation histor... more »

It's so hard to leave! When you are about to embark on a month and a half tour of Europe it shouldn't be a sad affair. Alfredo and I leave Lisaland tomorrow morning and of course we are excited but it is harder than I would have thought to leave the garden.
I've gotten all the tomatoes canned, we are good and stocked! Squash is... ...see more

The Italian word for eggplant just popped into my head, melanzana (if I'm not mistaken) and that put me in mind of the Arabic word brinjal. There was a variety in the markets in my day known as melanzan. T... more »

We've made it back safe and sound to a garden that is still exploding in areas and needing to be put to rest in others. Lots of catch up to do but I'm about to post some great stuff we saw on the trip and ... more »

Kale chips in the sun! Just like you would make them in the oven, but with only the energy of them sun.
Cut the stems out of the kale leaves.Lightly coat with olive oil.Add salt, pepper, any other seasoning you choose.
Lay out on a baking sheet in a single layer in the sun. I did this on a very windy day so they got moved into... ...see more

Katie's Journal: Sold on Sun-Drying Aug 23, 2012
Activity-icon-status

After realizing how easy it actually is to sun-dry tomatoes, at least in our Otricoli climate (though it has been quite humid and we have had no mold issues), I decided I couldn't stop there. Our neighbor Rita had shared a recipe for grilled zucchini preserved in oil but I was kind of nervous about how well this would really... ...see more

Spending my days in the Lisaland Test Kitchen. I think I have figured out our plan for sun-drying tomatoes. It is actually really quite simple....put them in the sun! For any of you who saw my first post about our sun-drying plan you know that I had the tomatoes under tight guard from bugs and kitties, surrounded by chicken... ...see more

They look great. So glad you got the process to work. I might have to try some in the car just to see. I don't think we usually have enough heat here but this has been a hot summer.

At first glance these looked like those candy fruit slices...they are so pretty! Nice work in the test kitchen!

So far I have put tomatoes out to dry (I decided on the Orange and Green Zebra, red cherry, chocolate cherry, Raspberry Lyanna, Purple Russian and the two surprise yellow/orange varieties because they are all on the smaller side and nice and firm...we will see the results of the drying tomato rainbow), canned roasted yellow pear... ...see more

Harvesting a few potatoes Aug 06, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Today we harvested half of our potato harvest and I think these should get Tom through the winter...and any number of neighbors as well! Time for potato salad, mashed potatoes, potato pancakes, twice baked potatoes, hash browns, french fries, scalloped potatoes. I need to get ahold of Rita and see if she can teach me a good gnocchi... ...see more
