....though we likely never will!
I am spending a lot of this week's 100+ degree weather in the kitchen preserving some of our produce. The first thing on the list...zucchini, of course! Today's assalt plan was Asian Style Zucchini Pickles, sent to us by our friend Karen, and Zucchini Sotto Olio from lovely Rita, our go-to neighbor... ...see more

Huitlacoche update! Jul 31, 2012
Activity-icon-status

After doing some research we decided to try two methods of inoculating corn smut into a few of our maize plants. The first method, as I read the Aztec's did to their maize plants so they could harvest huitlacoche, is to score the base of the stalk. Since the fungus is water-borne this helps the spores travel upwards to the ears.... ...see more

Its funny you are TRYING to get it - and I'm trying to keep it out of my corn.  =)  I don't even like mushrooms... so the fact this this fungus looks even worse than mushrooms - I don't think I c... more »

I agree, nothing better than harvesting an ear of your own corn and throwing it straight into a pot of boiling water and chowing down 15 minutes later. But, I also looooove me some "smut"! Alfredo and I ha... more »

Putting our soil to the test. Jul 31, 2012
Activity-icon-status

With all our tomato heartache (okay...maybe a little dramatic; they are producing, have tons of fruit and are doing fine, they just don't look as happy as I'd like) I decided it was time to test our soil. We tilled in some beautiful 3 year aged cow manure at the beginning of the season and said "let's go for it" because we were... ...see more

The animals add such personality!  I love ours in the garden, except when they roll over my plants and break them, trying to get me to pet them...  But, they sure do a great job protecting the ga... more »

I've spent this rainy day hunched over the computer searching for cures, pacing the kitchen and running an emergency trip to the doctor's office (the agricultural supply store in a nearby town) and whenever a dry moment came I was out there in the tomatoes, taking their temperatures and checking behind their ears.

Aside from our... ...see more

more yoga & a glass of wine at happy hour may help with the worry... you gave me a belly laugh or two with your saga, so if gardening isn't your career path you may want to consider comedy writing... ;-)

Katie's Journal: A mother's work and worry. Jul 23, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I think I am finally beginning to understand my mother's contant worry for the well being of her daughters and her agonizing over if she has done everything she can for us. With the Lisaland garden I may be experiencing my first real sentiments of parenthood; I am simultaneously proud and doubtful that I am doing all that I can... ...see more

Yes, our garden is like an extra child, and we worry and fuss at it all the time.  I know that it turns out just fine every year, but still I worry and fuss some more.

It's so true! A garden is like a child. It needs us to nourish and encourage...somehow I'm thinking it's been easier with our 2 kids! They never had a groundhog in their bed....or worms under the covers (I hope).
Katie's Journal: Lisa's Harvest Jul 19, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Today we celebrated Lisa Marini Finerty's legacy with a meal sourced directly from the soil into which she poured so much of her heart and soul. A year ago today Lisa's passing was an indescribable loss. She was an inspiration to so many with her infectious dedication to gardening and bettering our planet. Her Chicago garden,... ...see more

I can't think of a better way to pay tribute.  Not having my own veggie garden, and in keeping with the Otricolli meal plan for the day, we had to settle for In 'n' Out burgers, a glass of wine, and fond memories.
krandolph replied 10 months ago
I was on the road on the 19th, but thinking of Lisa all day long. Wish I could have shared your beautiful harvest meal; shared some Lisa stories with my family instead... saluti Lisa; you left the earth a better place.

A garden update. Jul 16, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Less weeding and more harvesting and that makes me very happy. Plucking suckers from the tomato plants, watching as more sunflowers open everyday and spreading coffee grounds where the flea beetles are giving us trouble. Other than that just enjoying the fruits of our labor and getting ready to process all that will come! Here... ...see more

Not the storm I'd been rain dancing for! Jul 13, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Well we finally got a storm yesterday and oh what a storm it was....10 minutes of very intense winds, about 5 minutes of very light drizzle and about 3 hours without power. Not exactly what I had in mind. Guess I'll try dancing to a different beat!

PrinceSnow replied 10 months ago
My goodness. It seems like people all over are suffering drought and having storms. Odd weather patterns across the globe I guess.  Still waiting for rain here in Massachusetts.
krandolph replied 10 months ago
How do you know when corn is ready to pick? Since this is our first time growing it, we don't know what to look for. The extreme heat seems to have stunted the stalks, but the ears are getting bigger...
krandolph replied 10 months ago
thanks! the drought has done a number on our few stalks, but we may get an ear or two...

That would  be lovely and fitting. We won't have ripe tomatoes, but will have a garden tribute on that day.
