Happy happy plants after a good soaking rain. Happy happy weeds too. I want to know everyone's favorite, free(ish) mulching techniques!
RoriTx replied about 1 year ago
Heavy cardboard or newspaper topped with hay. Works for the growing season, helps hold the moisture & adds to the soil as it breaks down.

Well it seems I must have forgotten my morning coffee on the day the corn was planted in the three sisters bed. The plan was to have corn planted, 4 to a mound, every other mound and squash/melon, 3 to a m... more »

I am not really sure about the overcrowding, but squash plants do take some major space.  How big are your mounds? and how far apart are they?  Would love to see pictures as they all grow, as I have not seed a 3 Sisters garden in the works.
gailsgarden replied about 1 year ago
It might be overcrowded if the mounds are close together. If it is a vining squash, you might be able to gain some space by giving the squash something to climb on (other than the corn) to grow "up" instaed of all over.
Katie's journal: Growing it forward; sowing the past to support the future. May 07, 2012

I'm a Chicago girl, with a deep sense of Mexico running through my blood, transplanted to the Italian countryside, for the time being, with the purpose of growing it forward with a legacy garden in the memory of a dear friend, Lisa Marini.

With all the weeding I've done in the last week I've had a lot...

This made me cry... but it makes me think Lisa is still pulling the strings (planting the seeds?) from some lofty vantage point... beautifully written, my dear.

Wonderful. Childhood gardens and wonderful moms (and dads) are an inspiration.
Queen_of_Green replied about 1 year ago
What great memories with your dear friend... I think she is watching over you and very proud of what you are doing in her memory. Very nicely written... :)

A perfect, lazy, rainy Sunday. The garden is happy and so are we; relaxed, rejuvenated and continuing to grow!

I happened to look out the window on Friday and saw Katie and Alfredo putting up a support structure for some cucumbers and I had to laugh at whether it was Art or Utility and guess it's a bit of both. It's in the shape of an L and when I asked why, Katie paused for a second and just said she liked the design that way. This coming... ...see more

The strawberries are blushing!
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
Sounds very yummy.  I do not think I will do strawberries this year, but next year I really want ot have alot of them.  Do you start any by seed?
YourGardenShow replied about 1 year ago
No we didn't start from seed, we got plants at the local nursery. I'd say if you want to have a lot next year go that route; ours are producing very nicely and are setting out good runners so I think we will have tons next season!

I went to Rome yesterday to see a friend and while there, I noticed a sign that said Natale di Rome and I thought, huh, Christmas in Rome now (Christmas is referred to in Italy as Natale), but he pointed out that Natale simply means birth which in the mind of the Roman Catholics typically refers to THE birth; in other words,... ...see more

Katie's journal: Artichoke season in Italia! Apr 18, 2012

'Tis artichoke season without a doubt here in Italy. While in Rome for the weekend with Alfredo it could not have been clearer. Almost every restaurant had Carciofi alla Romana on their daily menu and many were displaying their supply of 'chokes out in front to lure in the hungry tourists and Italians alike.
