Zen Garden Jan 24, 2013

The perfect garden when it is 20 degrees out!
ingredients:
Sand (or rice, grains or soil)! This sand is from a beach in Connecticut--it is naturally purple!
The tools are cut from pieces of copper
Rocks
The wooden box is actually a shallow drawer from a wood box.
maybe i should also make a seedling zen garden with dirt instead of... ...see more

gailsgarden replied 5 months ago

That sand looks cool. Is there a whole beach that is that colour?

amaranth3 replied 5 months ago
It was just a strip of sand between dune area and upper part of the beach. Not the whole beach but there was a lot of it!
JMTKMS replied 5 months ago
How cool!  I love your Zen garden and the colored sand makes it really unique.

I am hoping to start a few seedlings next week, I guess that will be my "Zen".  :)

5 days in to the 2013 garden season! I planted eggplant seeds: Little Fingers (2012 pack of leftover seeds so we'll see how the germination rate goes!), Rosita, Fengyuan Purple and Thai Yellow Egg. Also started Thai Red Roselle and Lavender. I have 3 little pots in a north facing window plus a few more down in the basement. I... ...see more

Good luck!  I'm thinking about starting onions later on in the week.  Your weather is similar to ours.  I went to the dentist this afternoon and the temp at the bank said it was only 4 degrees.....will be like this all week. Stay warm!

I made a big spreadsheet with all my seeds. I made columns for 1. Start seedlings date 2. planting date 3. Garden Location 4. Quantity of PLants 5. Info/Fun Facts 6. Scientific name 7. Harvest notes ...I also made a column for "type" which the "types" i divided stuff into are: full sun, full sun tall, herb, green, fall plant,... ...see more

I figure I had better do an inventory of the seeds I already have before making my giant seed order...here it is:
Seeds I saved:
lime basil
Chinese Red Noodle Beans
Rainbow Sweet Inca Corn
Jack Be Little Pumpkin
CIlantro
Love Lies Bleeding (Red variety but it was actually pink)

Had a lot more seeds than I thought but still looks like I will be ordering 37 new packets. Can't seem to cut the list any shorter than that! haha
sreece replied 5 months ago
Your garden must be enormous! I noticed on your list that you had saved Red Chinese Noodle beans. Did you like those? Are they a good variety to grow? I'm thinking you must like them since you saved seed...right?
amaranth3 replied 5 months ago
Red Chinese Noodle Beans are beautiful, easy to grow AND delicious. They were actually my favorite thing I grew last year.

Are you guys going to start "new" YGS gardens for 2013 or just continue with your current pages?

Edged 2 of the rows in the garden. Now it is in the 20s so will wait for the next warmer days to finish edging the rest of the garden. once that is done then will start on the garden expansion! Love these straight lines!
