As a child I used to grow cut off tops of beets & carrots in my room.  I always had cuttings of violets or other house plants.  My first garden was on the balcony of my first apartment and then we moved into a home with such beautiful soil everything grew wild, tomatoes everywhere.  It was much easier to garden year round in California.  Now in the Pacific Northwest I'm enjoying greens, herbs, potatoes and perennials.
