Once upon a time, when Fairbanks was founded, this town functioned almost solely on gold mining. Much of Fairbanks appeal is still centered around the fact that there is much gold to be had out of these hills. If you can find it, that is.
However the people who've been here for years, who've tried and tried and tried to exhume... ...see more

Well the garden has all been pulled and tossed to the chickens and the compost pile. The trees are mostly yellow these days, and while it rains most days I cannot keep myself inside away from such colors. The birch really do give a show of the last shades
Fall Has Arrived in Fairbanks AK Aug 20, 2012

I was trying, hoping even to avoid it for a few more weeks. It seems Mother Nature is bound and determined to undermine all my efforts at cultivating tomatoes, and so she sends Fall early this year. Damn, and I thought I'd started everything early enough this year!
As we make preparations for our final adventure of the summer,... ...see more

Wow, fall already.  I sure hope our fall is not an early one.  But, I guess if you live in Alaska, winter is a normal state of mind.... At least it seems that way for those of us who do not live ... more »

Fall is starting to sneak in here too. I would love to have moose and caribou in my freezer. My husband and I don't go hunting but I have family members who do. My northern sister once brought us some Caribou and Musk Ox. They were both good.

Meet Henry Aug 18, 2012

Meeting the blue heeler pups was a success. Olivia fell in love with a little guy with a black patch over one eye, chubby as can be, and wonderfully rambunctious. Now that he's home, she's not really sure she likes the competition for attention, but they play all day long.
There really is nothing like a child growing up with... ...see more

Dreadful day... put down our beloved Boss today. Not really in the mood to pay much attention to the garden....

He looks like such a love. I know how hard it is, we went through the same thing with our dog Rocky (he's still my profile picture) who was such such a fun goofy guy, but had a cancer that required a leg a... more »

Boss was the best. Even when in pain, he still wagged his tail at us, still got up and hobbled over to greet us with the same enthusiasm, and was still so gentle with Olivia from the day she came home. Of ... more »

Bad news, and Good news... Both wrapped in fur Aug 16, 2012

About 2 years ago we adopted our family dog, Boss. I remember walking into that garage in the middle of February the sounds of yipping and puppy growls bouncing off the walls. Peering into the pen, amid the rambunctious puppies wrestling and barking and growling- was the puppy I was destined to bring home. He was the only boy... ...see more

Man.... I knew there was some extreme heat going on in the lower 48 this summer, and a lot of drought too... but I was just blown away by the temperatures this last week.
Olivia and I spent a week in Salt Lake City Utah visiting with my sister and mother and other various family members that Olivia had not met yet, and who I... ...see more

Propane Stove Aug 05, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I used to wish and wish and wish that I had a propane stove. Cooking over flame is generally far better than cooking on an electric stove.
Until you try to bake something. Unfortunately, and no one tells you this because no one considers that it may interfere with the recipe, most recipes call for a specific temperature that... ...see more

Oh don't worry - this happens to me, too!  Mine usually involve forgetting something 'basic' about plumbing parts (bushing goes IN the coupling, not on the pipe)  that is very obvious to anyone w... more »

OH, Rainy Day..... except that it's not even really worth calling a rainy day, because it's raining in spurts, but is otherwise cold and gray and awfully dreary. -_- Staying inside, drinking tea, and baking zucchini bread sounds like the best way to spend
