I grew the cannas and elephant ear plants in these large containers so I could move them around if necessary. I did not split the plants last year so the containers are really packed with tubers that need to be divided.
@Clenram:I live in the city of Chicago on a small city lot so my garden space is very limited. The tropical plants have to be stored somewhere and I am fortunate enough to have a small room in the basement that stays cool and above freezing for the months of October thru March.
I am very inpressed by your presentation of photos and all the names of those plants you remember. I have to relearn most of the names each year of the limited number of plants that I grow.
@jerdeasy: I only know wildflower in Texas...I have to look up everything else. It helps that YGS imported Baker Creek seeds data bank because that is the only place I buy seeds these days.
It looks like you have more of a garden estate. You must be at this full time from the extent of your cataloging what you do. I would like to see more pictures of the ponds that you created.I am a retired art teacher so I see everything as an art expression and growing things are things of beauty. I tried to capture that quality in the paintings and sculpture that I did.
@jerdeasy: How cool! I am also a retired educator. I was a science teacher for 24 years and then a director of technology for 12. I am doing gardening full time now...but have never done it before so everything is an experiment. I will try to put up some more pond pictures. I need to add some more flag stone on the edges to get them to look a little more artistic! Yeah art teachers! Yeah artist!
I know what you mean about gardening being an experiment. I basically grow flowers and love the design aspect of the garden as much as the growing. I try to anticipate how a plant grows and get it the maximum conditions given our short growing time. I love morning glories but by the time they are ready to put on a show the fall is almost over. Coleus, geraniums and begonias are my biggest components and I have lots of variety in each category. I am designing a structure to go over the garage door and the side walk like a mini pergola and hope to have it in place by the next week. I have a small pond with a fountain, more the size of a kiddy pool that I want to incorporate next to my yard fence. I am constantly erecting temporary trellis's for things that want to vine up like tomatoes, clematis and others.
I am not big on vegetables because by the time they are ready to harvest they are dirt cheap in the stores and I do not have the space they need.
I had to retire from teaching 18 years ago because of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Gardening is a delight because I can work around my energy spurts. I have carpal tunnel in both hands which also is a problem but I am going to have surgery on one hand next month.
With all that I love to stick my hands in the dirt and see what grows....
@jerdeasy: You are in the right place with YGS! I think it will be fun to see what you do with your place! I understand about the vegetable..I have only started growing veggies in the past well going on three years. It is a challenge. I am going to post some of my failures today I think.
