To Water or Not to Water....

Apr 21, 2012
I do organic gardening for a multitude of different reasons: 1. I think it is the way to go because are attempts to outsmart Mother Nature have been futile at best; 2. I know that what i produce has no toxic chemicals or pesticides present; 3. It's a lot of fun and 4. because all my research shows that you can cut your water usage in half.

I have two rain barrels that hold appx. 90 gallons of water. Other that the water I used initially to germinate with, I have not watered any of my plants and we are approaching May. I added lava sand and zeolite as a few of  my amendments to help with moisture retention. So far it appears to be working perfectly. My plants are very healthy, I have no pest problems and I am not using any tap water therefore not paying for water. I no at some point I will have to use the rain I have collected but that is the reason I have the barrels. Less impact on my communities water supply and less money out of my pocket!!!!

Everything grows so much better with rain water. We have really, really hard well water. We live close to a lot of iron ore. Our next major project will include a rainwater harvesting system. We're just looking at storage choices now.

@RoriTx:I bought one really good barrel that has everything already designed into it to connect multiple barrels to it. The reserve barrel is just a black 35 gal. trash can.
