i have a very simple program. No synthetic fertilizers, not toxic chemical, or pesticides. My amendment follow three basic guides 1. compost; 2. rock powders (texas greensand, lava sand, soft rock phosphate, etc. 3. sugars (dry molasses, corn meal, etc.) All my amendments are designed to add soil health and microbe activity. With the addition of chelated shale and the lava sand I water for the first time over the weekend and do not plan on watering again until the end of may.

@joeythejoe:  Interesting concept - love all your products.  Plants are very healthy so you're obviously on the right course.  I'm an organic gardener too, so love hearing about what others use.  Thanks for sharing!

@Nellilein:all of this comes out of the "Organic Manual" by Howard Garrett. His approach is simple, cost effective, reliable, very practical, and easy do!

@joeythejoe:Thanks for the source - haven't heard of that book.

@Nellilein:I don't think that there is a more common sense approach than Howard Garrett's 'Natural Way,' I would highly recommend checking out his website:http://www.dirtdoctor.com/

chelated shale and the lava sand will hold water for that long of a period?
joeythejoe replied about 1 year ago
@RoriTx:from my vantage point yes. I dug down a few inches and the soil was still very moist. i only watered to be proactive bc it looks like 90's and no rain for at least the next 10 days.
RoriTx replied about 1 year ago
@joeythejoe: I'm always on the look out for any help in the moisture retention dept. We're going to be mid 80's all week and 90 this weekend.
joeythejoe replied about 1 year ago
@RoriTx:use both if possible. The one thing about the lava sand is that it has lots of trace minerals in it and because of its paramagnetism it aerates the soil as it is pulled down. You want to try a mycorrihzal product like Aplha Bio systems thrive. It helps to create a better root system. If you cannot find these products locally try online at the Natural Organic Warehouse

To much "heat" is not a good thing, but 80's and 90's sure sound good to me right now..... it s freezing!  We have been in the 60's the past couple days, which is not terrible, but yesterday and today the wind is blowing alot, and it is a cold wind.  Next week is supposed to be mid 70's... that really sounds nice, if the wind stays away.
Using the shale and lava to retain water is very interesting.  That could really be a good thing in Texas, can't imagine having your summers.

@JMTKMS: I just had another roll of hay delivered  this weekend and after I finish with my taxi duties I'm going to start a complete lay... of hay down the walkways and double thick on the beds. They rolled it out of the trailer Sunday on a slope so it got away from them, rolled down the hill and almost took out the strawberry bed. Until I peel it back some it's going to have to stay propped u... against the side. I can't budge it.
