Fly eliminators!!! Apr 21, 2012

Anytime you put out beneficial insects you always want to know that they hatched or survived. As I was showing our daughter the fly parasites in the "Texas Bug Book" one landed on the page very near to the picture of the fly. The kiddos thought that was really need as did I.

To Water or Not to Water.... Apr 21, 2012

I do organic gardening for a multitude of different reasons: 1. I think it is the way to go because are attempts to outsmart Mother Nature have been futile at best; 2. I know that what i produce has no toxic chemicals or pesticides present; 3. It's a lot of fun and 4. because all my research shows that you can cut your water... ...see more

Everything grows so much better with rain water. We have really, really hard well water. We live close to a lot of iron ore. Our next major project will include a rainwater harvesting system. We're just looking at storage choices now.

Just curious if any of my fellow gardeners are using any mychorrizal products? And if so what are you using?
julia42 replied about 1 year ago
I use Microlife fertilizer, which contains mychorrizal fungi.  So far, I've loved it.  I think it has really helped a particular bed of mine that had a lot of trouble with nematodes last year.&nb... more »

Where is he?  Inside?
joeythejoe replied about 1 year ago
that is a green lacewing and he is highly beneficial. the adult seen here helps in pollination but it is the larvae that are the real helpers. they eat aphids, mites and all kimds of other bad guys. he is outside under our porch light.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
He eats aphids, send him to me.  I have seen them in my garden, but I guess the aphids must have out numbered them.

Did you find him or catch him?
joeythejoe replied about 1 year ago
He is under the eve of the house. As a moth he is a good guy but as with most moths their larva are generally destructive. When he flew to the bricks of the house he blended in perfectly!!!!

Is anybody out there doing any foliar feeding? And if so what products are you using?
puckamok replied about 1 year ago
I am about to finally make some aerated compost tea to spray. I like to put seaweed, molasses, and comfrey leaves in my tea. I make it myself with a five gallon bucket and an old aquarium pump.
Sophora replied about 1 year ago
I'm familiar with all of those except the comfrey. Could you tell me about it?
puckamok replied about 1 year ago
Comfrey is a wonderful herb that  benefits wildlife, is medicinal, can be fed to livestock, and it is also good for the soil.

Nematodes Apr 16, 2012
Activity-icon-status

I applied my second application of beneficial nematodes two weeks ago tomorrow. Again I am very pleased with the results. Almost 100% of the ant activity is gone. I know that the ants will continue to migrate but so will the nematodes. Hopefully the will continue to reproduce and take care of the pesky fire ants.

tallulahshines replied about 1 year ago
yay! nematodes always remind me of the cartoon "doug." :) :) regardless, i'm just ordered some :)
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
Have you used these before?  Have you/do you just use these for ants?  I heard they are good for a garden, but not sure it there are different types for different bugs?
