Stupid Gardening Mistake of the year.

By: julia42
Apr 28, 2012
For your entertainment, I give you my "Stupid Gardening Mistake" of the year.

I have a long bed that runs down the alley beside my garage which I have planted with four blackberry plants.  The are spaced widely (6 feet apart) so I decided to take advantage of the extra room this year and try planting something in between.  Because the area gets lots of sun and there's a wide pathway that allows a lot of room to ramble, I chose...  watermelon.

Honestly, I don't know why it didn't occur to me that a climbing vine would be a really poor choice to introduce into a blackberry patch.  It's going to be such a huge mess to clean up when I have to prune out the blackberry canes that have fruited.  Not to mention trying to keep the vines off of next year's canes...

At least only one of the four blackberry plants is a thorny type....

Well, I do not think it sounds that bad.  Maybe the watermelon will just stay on the ground, where they belong, and the berries will be just fine.  I will be a good experiment.  Next year you will be all the wiser, as to do it again, or not.

I agree ... I don't think it is that bad ... you never know until you try.  I tend to remember what I did wrong than what I did right.

Well, I noticed this morning that they're already starting to climb the canes, which was what prompted my "d'oh!" moment.  Hopefully it won't end up being too much of a mess.  On the bright side, I do see some baby watermelons...

You lucky, watermelons already!  Just move the vines that want to climb the canes... they shouldn't mind.  I still think it sounds like a good combo.  Keep us posted.  Thanks..   I grew a pumpkin once, cut off all the vines I did not want and made the other go where I wanted, and it turned out great. We had one very big pumpkin and it did not take over the entire yard.  :)

We've all been there, learning by trial and error :)  Hopefully you'll be able to train the vines off the canes... either way the baby watermelons have to make the headache work it :)

I don't think it is that stupid!  Both are growing well ...it will be ok!  :)
