Someday I'm going to break down and plant a mulberry tree.  Love those things...

@julia42:We had one next door to our house as a kid. It's branches hung over our fence and I would eat them all day long

@julia42: Mulberry trees are awesome to have. Especially for the kids. No thorns plus they hang low enough for the little ones to pick the fruit. Make sure they don't peel off the bark though. One of my sons did to ours and now sad to say it is no longer around. I used the stump for a bird feeder.

@MaryLarson:I think one reason I'm so fond of them is that I remember eating them at my grandma's house as a child.  I distinctly remember a very specific train of thought that went something like this: "You eat the stem?  That's kind of yucky...  Actually it adds a nice crunch."

Bounty score! I miss our mulberry tree. Made some great wine & Mead as well as a great Black raspberry alternative in pies.

The orange thing was awful, by the way.  I'm not sure what it was.  It definitely wasn't either a sour orange or trifoliate rootstock, but whatever it was I don't know why anyone would have planted it.  Very sour, with a bitter aftertaste.

I've got alot of loquats also.  Got any good recipes for jam?
julia42 replied about 1 year ago
I've never made jam with them - sorry!  My kids and I eat them too fast.  Sometimes if I have a few too many I peel, pit, and freeze them.  They oxidize badly in the freezer but still taste really great as a frozen summer snack.
