Today I continued weeding the asparagus patch, managed to conquer most of it with a little help from my husband and ate my first spear which was in the way. I would really like to mulch this bed with someting to deter the weeds and grasses. I may buy some straw next week to see if that helps. I did notice where some leaves had pooled the weeds were less prevalent. A couple of days ago I started tackling the strawberry bed, but probably did more harm than good. the weeds were so thick i dug up the plants and reset them in the weeded area. Funny, i did much better when i just let my patches be and moved them every few years. Last year was a bad year with too much rain, here's hoping for a good crop this year.
The swiss chard patch halfway survived the winter, green came back, red did not. Also the two collard plants I got from someone last year also survived the mild winter. Now I need to figure out how to cook them. Have one cabbage plant that has a bunch of little heads on it, and a couple of the broccoli may also have overwintered. Time will tell.
On a side note, a red headed woodpecker is digging for bugs in our big light pole out back. Light died years ago, now we wonder if the bugs have moved in, should we get the tackle needed to climb it and replace, or just leave it be. I caught some photos of him which i will post later.
