I just looked up the japonica corn and it looks amazing! On my list for next year for sure!
JMTKMS replied 25 days ago
Wow, that japonica corn is beautiful! Do you eat it or just use it for its beauty? I have never eaten corn that wasn't white or yellow. :)

I planted japonica corn and whipporwill peas the other day - and the whipporwill peas are coming up already.  I planted nasturtiums, collards, kohlrahbi (both were worth a chance) and morning glory seeds today, as well as a few more good mother stallard beans because only two had come up.    I noticed almost all of the corn... ...see more

or rather, have planted.  I had sort of a 'cleaning out party' of my seeds from last year.  Whatever had a chance of being used - got found a place.  List it out:  Caladium bulbs, hollyhock seed, canterbury bells, chives, lettuce (lots of kinds), salvia, snapdragon, sweet william, columbine, gloriosa daisy, crackerjack marigolds,... ...see more

I saw more bean sprouts and zucchini... watered the surface of the earth down again as it is a hard crust otherwise.  I wanted to plant more things and was TOLD to by my five year old (ha) but did not have the time before dinner would be ready.  I hope I can get out there tomorrow with some things.  I intend to plant more... ...see more

The 'leftover' beans from a week or so ago have made an appearance, as are the Purple climbing greasy beans coming up...  But no wax beans - I will probably have to replant them.  The transplants I put out day before yesterday have all wilted... might come back, might not.  I had been distracted from watering them in the day... ...see more

I've been asking Mama Nature the same thing this spring.   I think we're finally clear of the snow, but now it looks like we'll have to work around some rainy days to get things in the garden.

The basil is getting second leaves.  I planted Pink Pop Socks Cosmos and ordered Early Primrose perennial seeds in the mail.  Watered a lot of things including the transplants from yesterday.

Ooh, basil!  I was just telling my husband this weekend that if things go well, we could be having the first batch of fresh basil pesto in about a month!

Weeded in between all the corn plants today - missing about six plants out of ninety so not so bad.  Planted teddy bear sunflowers again - from a different seed company, the others did not come up.  Noticed Good Mother Stallard beans are making a showing just in time for Mother's Day (haha), some more gourds and sunflowers. ... ...see more

Have you grown Good Mother Stallard beans before?  I'm trying them this year after several years of having them on my wish list - they are a gorgeous bean - I'm hoping the taste is good, too!

Mr.Harold told me how to properly plant a tomato seedling May 10, 2013
Activity-icon-status

I had said that I didn't want to transplant too close to a rainstorm because my seedlings would get pounded down.  He asked me how I was planting them - how deep etc.  Then he told me his secret for planting tomato seedlings (he had done 45 this year) that would withstand the wind and rain.  He said to dig a short trench,then... ...see more

I don't do the slope but I do dig a really deep hole - I remove a good portion of the leaves and bury it at least a foot deep.  The roots will form on the stalk and with it being planted so deep you b... more »

I read somewhere to sprinkle a little bit of Epsom salt at the bottom of the hole.....I never did that but was going to try it this year.
SweetDomesticity replied about 1 month ago
Interesting.  I've read some things that suggested trenching tomatoes (similar to what you're describing), but I guess I didn't pay that close attention - I've always planted mine like Peggy - as deep... more »
