Yum! I wanted to grow sweet potatoes but we couldn't find any starts here in Otricoli. When you try out the recipes share them in the forum so I can look back to them in years to come when I do get to grow sweet potatoes! (less)

My brother made the trellis from copper plumbing parts. He also gave us a cool spinning sprinkler made from copper. He is an engineer and all-around handy guy! The hops have had a hard time getting going. The vines were nipped off a couple times (some bird seemed to like the tast) but now that the surrounding herbs are taller it seems to be slowly recovering. I guess the trellis placement was a bit optimistic! I love the ways the hops look when mature, and have some friends who like to make beer, so if they ever produce I'll probably pass them along. (less)

Don't worry, as long as you keep them watered, in a few years they will be overflowing with hops. Mine have suffered a lot of abuse. I am still looking for the perfect companion because they end up getting... more »

Don't worry, as long as you keep them watered, in a few years they will be overflowing with hops. Mine have suffered a lot of abuse. I am still looking for the perfect companion because they end up getting top heavy and the bottom of the trellis looks empty.

They need to come with a warning label. If you rub up against the leaves in the wrong way the give you tiny scratches like papercuts and a horrible rash. it took me two weeks to get over it. Next time I am wearing long sleeve and gloves and maybe a veil.

I bet it would. Ours came from a friend here in southwest Michigan who wanted to get rid of some; it was taking over a big moist area on her property. We also saw a guy clearing a large patch of bamboo on a recent trip to Louisiana (Abita Springs, north of Lake Pontchartrain). It was growing in a shady, moist area. It is pretty invasive so choose the site carefully. We cut it late last summer, trimmed off all the leaves and stored it under our front porch in bundles over the wintwr. It was dried & ready to use this spring. Will post some pix after we get our tomatoes in (finally!); we're going to use bamboo for supports. (less)

I'll let you know! I just bought some to plant; when I cut them up prior to planting they bled dark purple like beets do. I've had some purple potatoes in with mixed fingerlings; when roasted had a hearty, mineralish taste... delicious. The plants are a lot smaller than the Yukon Gold; maybe they'll mature later. (less)
