The harvest is well underway at school. Plums galore and zuchinis mostly.

I have been going to school every so often to water, add some diatomaceous earth and plant another corn crop to ensure a long harvest. I haven't run into any parents watering, but I misy assume they come t... more »

I start about 40 kinds of heirloom tomatoes from seed and sell the plants. It replaces a little of the 100's I spend out of my own pocket...every bit helps.

I could talk all day about how we could improve schools and learning. Outdoor learning is the best way to grab the attention of the young, inquisitive mind. The politicians who control the money are all ab... more »

Odd how the two things that mean the most to us, our children and the food we eat, is managed by political BS!  I too, could carry on for hours, and wish I had been more voiceful in the past... more »

That is really cool!  Do they work on it all summer?
larryvolpe replied 11 months ago
I only have have 3 students with a parent who keep it watered and pick the veggies. It's tough organizing summer work days...I only it do that once or twice a summer.
larryvolpe replied 11 months ago
I asked all the kids to ask their parents who would like to water during the summer. I made it clear that they get to pick and take home all the veggies. One from my class was all I could get. The other pa... more »

The school year has ended. We spent the last few weeks adding lots of hay around the plants, weeding and making sure garden was ready for a summer of being tended by only a skeleton crew of 3 parents/familes and myself.
larryvolpe replied 11 months ago
Of course we planted more so most of the plots would contain veggies. Right now the plums are about ready and we are getting some zucchinis as well. We also have lots of onions (about 6 kinds) that are abo... more »

I finally compiled a list of things we have planted at school. The list is not comprehensive because I do not add everything to the garden journal. See comments for the rest.

This page does not allow me to share as much as I want...it also does not allow me to cut and paste as it adds all the mumbo jumbo before the post.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
Sadly your posts, on my screen, look a bit jumbled.  The first half is all font type information and your actual post is at the end.  Strange, never saw this before.

I have never actually seen one of these in person, or would you say "in bug".  I hope I never do see any in my garden, but they sure are interesting.  That is one big bug.
larryvolpe replied about 1 year ago
very big...and cool to find to...not scary at all. even more fun to rear out to a large beautiful moth (sphinx moth) and release...only to lay eggs on the tomatoes again
CreativeGreenThumb replied 11 months ago
I caught one of those munching on my Roma Tomato yesterday.  He was quite huge and we had the hardest time finding him even though he was right in front of our eyes!  We fed him to one of our hens and she just loves them!
