Manchester Boddy's rancho, developed while he ran LA's only liberal newspaper in the 1930's, is the center of controversy even today.  When WWII came, he was a "placeholder" landlord for a Japanese nurseryman and family who were interned. He returned the property to them at the end of the war, and the nurseryman, in appreciation, gifted more and more precious plants, including his signature -bred camellias, the "tea" plants, to Boddy -- and Descanso now hosts one of the U.S.'s largest camellia collection, with over 700 varieties and cultivars.  All are remarkable and some are one-of-a kind, but the collection...
