Lots of progress made today!

Apr 17, 2012

We did a lot of work for the garden today. We bought our compost/dirt mix from a nice place down the road. They delivered it and it looks wonderful. A nice blend of 20 year old compost of sawdust and horse manure. My vegies should love that. We bought extra to spread around the other planting areas.

Sam bought a lot more wood and wire to build 5 more raised beds. Each the same size 8 feet by 4 feet and 1 foot deep. We installed a hose for the top deck to be able to sprinkle the flowers and container garden with a fresh supply of well water. Sam was concerned about me carrying wobbly bowls outside with Ava. I guess we looked pretty ridiculous pouring from heavy, wobbly bowls and then me enlisting the help of a one year old to bring them back inside for me.

Sam worked on the new tractor a bit. He installed a front loader onto the machine to be able to pick up big piles of dirt and bring them to the beds. The hill we live on is pretty steep. We bought a hoe, spade, sledgehammer...oh just all kinds of things.

We have spent quite a bit on this garden...there is no going back from here now. On another note, we completely wiped out the lettuce I grew. It was delcious. Absolutely buttery and soft. Flavorful without being bitter or earthy. It was the Rocky Top lettuce mix from Baker's creek Heirloom seeds and I highly recommend you try it. Delish. I am planting more in the new beds.

You both have been very busy working in the garden.....no wonder you ate all the lettuce.....you have to keep up that energy!!  What will you plant in your new beds?

@Liz: Well...he is filling them up now. :) One bed is going to have bare root strawberry plants. I don't know how they will do. They are Ozark Beauty. Then...who knows I have so many to plant and not enough space yet. I come home from the market every week with new finds! I'm addicted. I keep telling Sam...yes we need this, it's for our heath. lol But I have a nice mix of cucumbers, squash and tomatoes and peppers and herbs for the main beds. Then I have to figure out how to plant my big vines (many melons and watermelons) Plus there are those giant pumpkins Sam had to grow for Ava. (He wants to be the cool dad in town lol) I have plenty of space for all of the vining plants, but what I don't have is a way to keep the deer and groundhog from them. This will be experimental to say the least. If I get one melon from each vine I will be overjoyed.

@linzelu100: I think you have the same "addiction bug" that the rest of us have!  Just enjoy your gardening adventure!!

Spending hard cold cash does wonders for cementing the commitment.Nothing worse than throwing your hard earned money away but I look at it as a permanent  investment that pays you back a hundredfold.

@RoriTx: I hope so. I stopped adding. It was getting painful. We may be in the thousands. The mower and tools really set us back a bit. The beds are pricey to build too. I found chocolate mint today at the market! I bought two, b/c I don't know that mine will spread like yours. I'm putting them in a huge container pot I got at the auction. They can happily spread in there. Partial shade is best right?

It is sometimes hard to see all the cash going out this time of year when you're preparing and planting the garden; I always start to feel better about it once the harvests start coming in and I am reminded of how much we would have spent on produce for the garden season.  The sense of accomplishment is always great, too :)

@SweetDomesticity...: I bet. So far all we have eaten from the garden is herbs, lettuce (once lol) and peppercress which we hated. Not much to show for the hard work yet. Soon...

So how many beds will you have in all once they are all done?
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
@sreece: It will be 8 by the time we are done this week. Plus the container garden on the deck, the flower bed, the cactus garden, the fruit orchard, and a big field of melons/pumpkins. I'd like a few more beds, but my hubby cut me off and said I have enough for now. I am greedy for tomatoes.
