Do you know of a good heirloom vegetable book?
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
In particular...a book where it has pictures of all the varieties? Say like you would see in a good catalogue, but with large pictures and indepth descriptions and histories?Know of any? Like a book on tomatoes with just heirloom tomato varities. Or maybe you have been looking for one like this too..Heirloom books are few in comparison to other gardening books.

@linzelu100:  So far my favorite is the Baker Creek Seed Catalog!  :) :)  I will be interested also if you find a good one.  YGS should start putting one together, it would be a big hit.

I just don't know if it's a good one or not. There are so many poor books out there.

Heirloom Vegetable Gardening by William Woys Weaver is supposed to be the definitiveÂ... on heirlooms but it's out of print and copies now go for $200+. They have an E book version for $30 but I just don't think it would be the same

This book is the culmination of some thirty years of firsthand knowledge of growing, tasting, and cooking with heirloom vegetables. A staunch supporter of organic gardening techniques, Will Weaver has grown every one of the featured 280 varieties of vegetables, and he walks the novice gardener through the basics of planting, growing, and seed saving. Sprinkled throughout the gardening advice are old fashioned recipes - such as Parsnip Cake, Artichoke Pie, Pepper Wine, and Henry Ward Beechers Favorite Turtle Bean Soup - that highlight the flavor of these vegetables. This is the first comprehensive garden book on this subject that also includes meticulous research on the origins and dates of introduction for most of the varieties discussed, as well as fascinating stories and lore about the vegetables. It is illustrated with over one hundred color photographs taken in the authors garden and with over two hundred line drawings and includes a listing of commercial seed and plant stock sources.

@RoriTx: Thank you! I never woould have found that book on my own. My next ordering I am going to get that one for sure. The recipes sound nice. I read online about it a little bit too. A keeper for sure.

@RoriTx: I went out this morning to check on my three sisters bed...I cant tell if there is weeds or what I planted growing, but THERE ARE SLUGS OUT THERE! For what? Nothing is really even growing. WHy are they slugging around on the soil?
RoriTx replied about 1 year ago
@linzelu100: Slugs, other than beer in a plate I'm not sure. I don't have them so maybe someone else can help you out. You'd think if the book was that popular they'd do another printing.

I second William Woys Weaver's book.  It is teriffic.  The e-book honestly isn't that bad, but most public libraries also have a copy.
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
@MEGarden: oh ok thanks, Ill check my library out online :)
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
@MEGarden: too bad...no luck :( our library is pretty limited on all the kinds of books I like. Gardening and cooking.
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
It's out of stock for 40 bucks. The cheapest is in the low hundreds at amazon.com too rich for my blood.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
@linzelu100:  I was just looking it up on Amazon to see what it looked like, and it said they had like 4 copies in the 40- 50 dollar range.  I am going to check my library first, as i think the cover looks familiar.  But if it is that good, I think I will try to get a copy.
