Emmy Tomato- I have a deep connection to this tomato's story

My beloved Emmy Tomato...

May 09, 2012

I am deeply in love with a tomato I am growing. I will probably grow this tomato forever. It's legacy is beautiful and inspiring. This tomato is the reason I began seed saving.

I bought the seeds from Seed Savers Exchange. Here is the story:

"Emmy was born in Translyvania which used to belong to Hungary. After WWI it became part of today's Romania. At the end of WWII a woman named Emmy was expelled (for being of German descent) and had to leave her house. As she left in fall of 1945, she grabbed a tomato, managed to keep it throughout the arduous journey into Germany and kept planting the seeds of her Translyvanian tomato. Ernestine Bloomberg, met Emmy in 1978 in Rosenheim, Germany. When Ernestine left Germany in 1979, Emmy gave her some of the seeds from her yellow Transylvanian tomato. Ernestine planted the tomato every year since."

The tomato is yellow, does not grow very large and has a very intense tomato flavor. It was named Emmy after the woman who saved it and kept it going.

Imagine being forced from your homeland, leaving family and all familiar objects behind, and being able to grab and save one thing. Emmy saved her tomato. The importance of this story is not something I wish to forget, which is why it will be in my garden collection forever. I hope you all enjoyed Emmy's story as much as I did :)

That looks and sounds like a tomato that I had last year.  I loved it. The size, color and flavor were absolutely tremendous... but, I did not know what it was.  Thanks, now I will know what to look for, for next year!  :) :)

@JMTKMS: Now that I know it tastes good, I am even more so looking forward to it! Thanks :)

@linzelu100:  I hope one of the volunteer tomatoes that I am saving will end up being this one.

Interesting story. Is that a seed one can order from Baker Creek?
linzelu100 replied about 1 year ago
@Sophora: No I don't think so. It was first offered in the seed savers exchange members only yearbook. (I am not a member). I believe it did so well with the members that they offered it in the SSE catalogue, to which anyone can order from. (This is how I bought it.) I am not sure that they will continue offering it, which is a shame. Usually if something isn't popular they won't offer it again for a while, to start offering something else in it's place, to help their goal of preservation of heirlooms. The more rotation, the better chance to save lots of seed types I guess. They may offer it again though. I am saving seed from my tomatoes this year, I can always mail you some if you can't get ahold of it. I feel like I am Emmy's advocate lol. I just love this tomato.
