Preparing fall and winter garden

May 10, 2012

Well, my summer garden isn't even in full swing yet, but I am preparing the fall and winter garden. I am learning that with gardening, a person must stay very ahead of the seasons. I ordered a mix of garlic bulbs and hearty winter greens. I have some other seed ready too, like Watermelon radish, carrots and some other greens from trades. Of course I ordered more peas, snow peas this time, because my husband adores eating the fresh spring peas in his stirfry. We made another order pronto.

I am finding that there is very little information out there on winter fall gardens and I have to wonder if it is because most people don't put the effort into that gardening. It also seems like every source I find for winter gardens is actually a source for a fall garden. Do people not see the difference? Or is there no difference? I want to eat from our garden year round, so for me it is imperative. I am sketchy about timing and what can stay in the garden through the winter rains and snows. I am just playing it by ear. My garden story this year should have read, "gardening by trial and error".

I know I push this book alot, but I truly love it.  It is the Winter Harvest Handboo...- if you want a winter garden it is a good choice.  Check it out from the library and see what you think.  It uses green houses, but I imagine some of the crops could be grown in the  ground with ground covers...depending how cold your area gets.  But it is a very interesting book and I would love to hear what you think about it... if you get to read it.

@JMTKMS: I requested it from the library. I heard so many mixed things about this book. The greenhouse is what threw most people for a loop, sure you can grow food in winter with a greenhouse. I really want to know more about how to cover with a sheet, or plastic. Temps that certain plants can't survive at, watering amounts, pests. Things like that, things that will directly effect a winter garden. I want to minimize my mistakes if I can my first go around.

Our fall gardens here are pretty similar to our spring gardens, and our winter gardens are more like what's described by you as a "fall garden".  That is to say, I don't have winter garden advice for you.  But I'm with you on the planning!  I just sketched out my plans for the fall garden and ordered some seeds.  Sometimes planning is as much fun as harvest!

@julia42: Well...maybe that's why I ca't find much info on winter gardens. Maybe most places have mild winters. I'll keep looking though! I am addicted to the planning part. My plans never go accordingly though, I still like to make them. I think picking out and ordering the seed is the most fun I have gardening. Oh the possibilities! What did you just order? I love to hear what other people pick out. It's usually things I wouldn't pick, then I hear their reasons, and I make a new order based on them! lol

I am so overwhelmed with this garden, that you guys really sound ahead of the game.  I can write down what I want for next year, but a fall garden is overwhelming.  I know we could do so much more, but since we just really realized... fall potential this year, it is kinda hard to get it all going.

@JMTKMS: No way! A fall garden isn't overwhelming. The summer one is tuff. If you are planting brussel sprouts, cauliflour, pumpkins, sure, it can be, because you have to start planting now. But if you just plant some greens, peas and maybe garlic...it's easy. You should try some greens. Just see how it goes. It may get you in the mindset that it isn't so bad after all, and you may end up doing a big garden in the fall every year after. I am going big fall and winter, (my first year trying these types of gardens) because I have no self-control and can't stop ordering seed.

It is so cool for you to be planning for your fall garden.  I have already ordered seeds for fall and have everything sectioned for now and later!  You are doing so well!  Keep up the Good work.

@Clenram: Thank you! What did you order? I love hearing what other people pick out.

I could tell you what I put in my fall/winter garden but it probably wouldn't help you much.  We don't have much of winter here.
