My garden is finally here!

May 20, 2012

After all these years of trying I finally have a garden I can walk through and enjoy. It's been 6 years. Many attempts later I am finally growing plants. The key for me this year was using heirloom seeds from good dealers as opposed to the big chains like Lowes, using raised beds with loose soil and most importantly using lights to grow my seeds. The lights have been the biggest improvement. I have tried to grow plants by a window for a long time and they usually didn't grow past an inch or so without dying or growing long tall and skinny making themselves unsuitable for growing vegetables.

We haven't eaten much from our garden at all. It hasn't been successful in that manner. We ate about 30 pea pods, a nights worth of salad and some herbs I got as transplants and kept alive. ( I seriously have not been able to grow herbs from seeds.) So we definetly aren't having feasts from the garden like some of you. But the garden has grown and looks healthy and I'm not impacting the environment in any negative ways with pesticides or strange growth hormones. I'm excited that I can walk through the garden at night and in the morning and Ava can play in it during the day. I have tomato and cucumber flowers already and I am hoping for a lot more vegies this season than last. I put in a lot more effort this season so I am praying that will pay off.
