To extend or not to extend the garden

Jan 05, 2012
Manley is talking about enlarging the garden.  He has some cedar that would make perfect posts and we have a tree that needs to come down if Mother Nature doesn't do that herself this winter.  He is thinking of making an area where we can add some more beds and a place for my Theresa Bugnet rose and my lilac that the moose won't leave alone.  The hard part for me is designing.  I had originally 'walked' the plan out but never liked what I came up with....I guess I will take some time and draw out my ideas.

EXTEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You'll have more to share with all the deprived gardenless folks!And...it's cool that you have moose eating your lilac--who can say that?  Not me! My husband is alternating talk of a pit greenhouse for year-round production and a long hoophouse...I am leaving it up to him and focusing on my last 6 months of school.  I am taking an exciting class called "Genes and Chemicals in Agriculture"!!  I am really curious what it will be like since the prof is a genetic engineer!  I am pretty devoted to organic and heirloom, and it will be interesting to learn more to fuel debates and round out my opinions with some science. Take care, thinking of you all here at the Garden Show, but I have to control my syrfing so I can focus...I made the honor roll last quarter by some miracle and I want to finish strong. Right now I've got baby lettuce and spinach and mache in my cold frames, patiently waiting for February sun...I had to BUY lettuce last month for Christmas dinner and I was not pleased--first time I have bought lettuce in a year! Happy planning, Belinda.

I would trade the moose eating my lilacs for a pit greenhouse, throw in a flock of chickens  and I would be a happy camper.  So are we talking genetic engineering of plants?  Keep us informed.  To tell you the truth that stuff scares me but facinates me.  Stay strong and be a sponge.  We have a sun room in the house and I am so tempted to try to grow some tomatoes there.  I don't think we get enough sun in the winter but I might try it anyways.  So, do you brush the snow off the cold frame each storm?  Our winter has been crazy so far...not much snow and we had some warm weather.  How about your area?  Drop in to the garden show every now and then and let us know how you are doing...AND take pictures when your husband decides which to do...good man ;o)

Why not extend AND get a flock of chickens? From the looks of your garden, you are much better at designing than you think you are! Well Done!

@Queen_of_Green:Thank you but I can't take credit.  I just say a bed here and a bed there...Manley takes that and goes with it....I would love chickens but we have so many predators (coyotes, hawks, eagles, bobcats, mink ermin, bear, fox) and I get so attached.  We would have to build a metal compound.  My friend had a chicken coop built that looked safe.  Mink somehow got in and killed every one of her hens.
